I'm the guy that usually has to either convince the sound guy or sneak in and tweak and disappear before someone notices that the sound now sounds good.
Three rules;
1. never confuse the channel adjustments with the overall EQ.
2. this just might be the easiest way to conceptualize good EQ.
3. the idea is to hear every instrument and voice.

At low volume, place your favorite track online.
Zero your EQ and Channel.
Adjust the channel to where its tolerable.
Then, one at a time, explore each band;
20-200Hz - Bass Drums, Bass.
250 Guitars drone at about this frequency.
500 Mush, mostly chords, higher Bass Guitar register and Lower Vocal range.
This particular range is both cluttered and very prone to feedback.
I have never had a situation where I have not had to cut this down.
1KHz Higher end for vocals, guitars and the lower end for Cymbals
This band is also a bit quirky.
2k-10+k, Cymbal flavors, good in moderation, otherwise it causes SSSS's.

Just like being able to hear high, mid, and low response for instruments, and voices before adjusting, you have to be able to identify your overall sound's problems in each broad spectrum.
1. its better than driving everyone crazy with pink or white noise.
2. clean sound carries a good distance, and won't cause deafness because you don't have to raise the sound level so much.

Voices.
I know two sisters who are singers.
One of them is good, but a certain lack of definition is what places her as the lesser of the two.
The other sister has an edge, her voice includes some highs and some bass.

So, this is what you do.
If the singer has no bass, you can add some.
If the voice is painfully shrill, look at some mids and some bass.
If the voice just booms, notch down the bass, and look at tweaking the mids and highs.

So, train your ear, experiment a little, and soon enough you'll have a decent sound that only gets better with practice.
