Question for you folks who have done a lot of lessons for beginners - is there a specific technique for strumming and/or picking that is advisable for beginners to learn first? Pick or no pick? Some relatives of mine are learning, and I've noticed each one seems to have a different comfort zone for playing: Most don't want to use a pick because they say it's too hard, and of those, one likes to strum with thumb and index finger together, one strums with the backs of all the fingernails, one strums with the thumb; when playing scales or picking notes, most prefer thumb/fingers and don't want to use a pick. Sigh. Or does it not matter which technique they start with? Thanks in advance for the advice!

I have start playing with a plek. Now I spend more time with finger picking and learn also with a slide. Therefore I have a good slide book, also different
finger picking styles are included.

start with that you want to, if you have got routine try the next one style or
technic.

in th www you find a lot of training materials or infos.

good luck

:D

I think some of it may also depend on what type of music they are into and are interested in playing. If someone is into classical, they are probably used to listening to fingerpicking, and will probably be fine fingerpicking. If someone is into metal, then they should probably learn to play with a pick at some point as some of the picking techniques with that style of music would probably eat your thumb and thumbnail alive....but then again, thats one of the great things about music, at times, there are no rules, so as long as they have fun and enjoy themselves, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Unless you want to subject them to some sort of strict posture and technique like they were in Robert Fripps League of Crafty Guitarists or something....

As it's been said, any style is valid and it's usually tied into the type of music you want to play. You can achieve different sounds using different techniques.

Bottom line - for now do what feels right for you. Over time you will learn more and figure out if you need to change your style. Most guitar players do not play with just one style.

+1 to all of these replies. If all goes well, you'll go through every type of picks. Fingers, 351's, 348's, 346's, Big 'Ol Triangles, Finger Picks......I never could get Finger Picks to work :(

Its good to be able to play with a plectrum as well as finger-style. But, in the end it really comes down to what feels good/natural to you. That's the playing style you'll need to develop.

Looks like the consensus is let them use whatever method they're most comfortable with... and we're all about having fun with it! Mostly I'm just glad their guitars are coming out of the cases these days. Thanks for the advice!
