No work today. Construction has come to a complete standstill hereabouts. I work for a mason and we haven't had steady work since Sept - just some remodels here and there. Have two huge projects we were pulled off of until the market settles down.

No worries. I'm too old to be in construction anyway. Let this old body heal up a bit.
Interesting - no young ppl coming up in the trades. We've tried hiring younger guys. They last about two days. Can't say as I blame 'em. Like one said "This is hard!". yup

Don't be in any hurry!! Stay in school as long as ya can!!
Find something you truly love doing, learn as much as you can and get to be the best at it.
My uncle loved to fish, so he went into Fish&Wildlife at the UW. Now he gets paid to fish and fly around in a helicopter all day.

Work is for those with nothing better to do. If you truly love what you do, it's more like play than work

music is my greatist love and i meant that as i do nothing for the next 4 years (a good thing)

Are you sad to not be at work? I'll gladly change places with you. I've got a song at home I need to finish!

Work is pretty slow here today, most Fridays come down to monitoring installations and handling any trouble tickets that come in.

What do I do? I work for a telephone/internet/cable TV provider in Central WI, about 10k cable subscribers and 30k telephone throughout our area.

Since I used to work in cable TV my primary responsiblity is the headend and Cable distribution system. Here's a photo from last winter, I'm the one in the bucket on the left. That's the main dish for satellite channel reception and it's on the roof of our 3 story building, just to put height in perspective. Was about 10 degrees above zero that day, of course that stuff only breaks when it's cold...!

Yep, and Friday afternoon is management meeting time. Nothing like a 3 hour Friday afternoon meeting to have you appreciating getting home, pouring that glass of wine and wrapping your hand around your guitar.

Bear in mind that if your are using your employer's IT services for non-work related activities you may be in line for major issues. Employers are entitled to monitor those systems. Internet is public domain.

You make a good point but in my case, I know I'm on safe ground. We do monitor any and all employee Internet and email use and depending on what you do, it could be grounds for immediate termination. Our policy allows for reasonable use of the Internet and email for non-business activities provided that what you do isn't something that a coworker could legitimately object to (porn site, racist site, etc.), isn't something that would put us in a bad light with clients and so on.

It's a very reasonable policy while still protecting the company. The Fender site would be okay (I'm one of the people who wrote the policy, so I have a very good idea of what "we" had in mind). Firstly, I post during lunch or break (okay for any employee), neither Fender nor any competitors are clients (we're in the movie/TV payroll biz) and I don't say anything that would be actionable in an HR sense.

Nor of course would I ever post anything that could be considered confidential or proprietary. I can't tell you how many people ask "how much did so-and-so make on that film" once they learn what I do. I will never tell, and there are many other issues that I know or hear that would never be appropriate to post. As I tell my staff: if you have to pause for even a second to wonder if saying "this" is okay, it probably isn't.

But the truth is, as you point out, that many employers monitor and they aren't always up front about and/or don't take the time and effort to write out and explain a fair policy for everyone to follow. So I 100% agree that unless you know ... as in my case ... caution is advised!
