Okay so I just started playing the acoustic guitar about months ago and I totally think I'm ready to get an electric guitar from Fender but the problem is that my mom wants me to stay on budget and not spend too much money like what I did on my acoustic guitar. I only saved up $300 right now and I really want to have a stratocaster but the ones that I find cost more. I mean I play an electric guitar but its technically not mine its one of my school teachers/guitar teacher's because our class started a band ukuleles, bass, guitar and drums and we also got a space to practice but anyways I need help got any ideas?

Welcome!

You're in the range of a brand new Made in Mexico (MIM) Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster. Save a few more $$$ and you'll be there.

The other option is to look for used You can get more guitar for you money if you don't mind used. It might even be "road worn" for you :) . Check ebay and your local craigslist.

I always have a few MIM for sale in that range. Where are you located? :)

As usual I'm going to be the odd man out here. My advice to you is to simply go to a decent music store, play all the instruments in your price range and buy the one that you like best. The Squire Standards for example are -excellent- instruments. Right now brand new they're only going for $199 at Guitar Centers compared with only being able to buy a used MIM...and I -never- recommend that an inexperienced person buy a used instrument as too many things can be wrong with one. If you don't know what to look for, you can get really burned. In addition, I have an MIM and 2 Squire Standards and stock off the shelves, the Squire Standards are every bit as good, if not better than the MIM's (both of my Squire Standards have better hardware and pickups then my MIM did new). Also, by going with the Squire, this would also leave you a hundred bucks to put into a practice amp as well...having an "electric" guitar doesn't do you much good at all without an amp.

Either way, since you are essentially just starting out, just go to a music store and again play all the instruments in your price range then buy the one that you are most comfortable with. No one on an internet forum is going to be able to tell you what's right for you...only -you- can decide that and the only way to do that is by playing a few.

Only my $.02...please use it for what you believe it's worth,
Jim

If you're sure you're going to stick with it and play it everyday for the rest of your life except when something really weird happens, because a guitar is a never ending, never mastered experience, then play your good acoustic and wait. If your acoustic has a decently low action, you can develop picking blues songs on that and begin to play barre chords as well as open chords. You can work on keeping time to a metronome or background drum track. Then, once you've saved up, buy a Fender to be proud of - what you really want, whether it's a Highway One (my choice with Custom Shop pickups added), a MIM, a classic, a full American, whatever. A proper guitar is 6 strings and a fret board snd you can learn and grow. If I had it to do again, I would never have bought a cheaper guitar. Your growth as a musician depends on your instrument as well as your talent and dedication. Clapton talks about it in his autobiography.

If you have already saved $300, then may I suggest pawn shops or some other place that has used equipment. You should be able to pick up a good Fender Stratocaster for about that price range. $120 more dollars will get you a new Stratocaster.

As someone else mentioned, I would play as many guitars within your price range and see which one is right for you. There are "other" brands out there that may be good for a beginner's electric. However, if you are hard pressed for a Fender, you may want to save a little more and just put down the money for one, otherwise you may always feel like you almost had it.

Let us know what you do. RK

hey, lots of options in the Squier line of guitars, my first was a 90's Squier that never treated me wrong. as you also heard, always check for used stuff (preferably at a store near you...it's always nice to play something before you buy it). if there's a Fender dealer near you check with him/her. i'm sure they can help you out. feel free to message me whenever, i'll try to answer back. i'm new on the site but know my stuff...keep playin'!!

My recommendations:

Squier Standard Stratocaster: $200
Roland Micro Cube amp: $125

You're there! 8)

That's almost how I started two years ago and I don't regret it.
MIM Strat
Roland cube 20
Good luck with your search.
Claude.

I am only 15 years old and about a year ago I was looking at the Fender Stratocaster. My grandma said I could only spent about $500. So I went and looked for one and I discoverd that fender has the American Made and the Mexico made ones So I went and read about them and asked My local music store and Was told the same thing and That was the Mexico made are cheaper because the electronics and stuff in side the guitar is not as good. The American Made are more money but are made better. So I saved up more money and Got a 2008 fender American Made Stratocaster it coast me $1300

So If I was you I would save my money and wait.

But wait- there's more.
The bigger reason for the higher price tag is quality control (which isn't even an issue on mexi's, and many people say they actually feel better than MIA's) and value (let's face it, guitars made in this country are just worth more here). If you want better electronics, don't spend 500 extra mulah when you can buy the parts and have someone install it or do it yourself.
