The telephone dial tone is A-440, that is if you still have a land line.

For $15.00 you can go and buy yourself a Korg tuner. It'll be one of the best investments you'll ever make. I bought mine over 8 years ago and it's still going strong.

Good advice this....I have an Ibanez tuner, does the same thing.
They are various prices, just choose one you can afford, it will have instructions with it.
Keep you in tune....get you rockin'
Cheers, :D

Yeah and once you have that korg tuner, or whatever other brands are out there, try only tuning the low E, then tune the rest with your god-given ears!

will really improve your musical hearing skills.
( 5th fret of low E = A, 5th fret of A is D, fifth fret of D is G, 4th fret of G is B, 5th fret of B is E)
ya dig?

+100 - a tuner is essential!

... and don't forget the harmonics method ...

5th fret harmonic 6th string = 7th fret harmonic 5th string, and so forth.

I like this method and it's fairly easy. You'll hear an oscillation when the strings are not in tune - the speed increases the further away you get and decreases as the two string come into tune. When it stops, you're in tune!

I started with an A Tuning Fork, but when I couldn't find it, I'd start a song on the Stereo that I knew was in proper 440 and had a long E begining, Like Rush "Tom Sawyer" or Zeppelin "The Rover" and just try to match your E string. Then....
5th Fret E string = Open A
5th Fret A string = Open D
5th Fret D string = Open G
4th Fret G string = Open B
5th Fret B string = Open E

For drop D on the fly Pluck the low E and D string together, and crank the E down till is synchs with the D. To put it back in stanard, Pluck Low E (now D) String and the high E string and Crank the Low string up till it synchs with the High e. Not Matched, remember it's supposed to be 2 octaves lower.

I also recommend buying a good tuner. And like others have said learn other tuning methods too.

As many have said, buy a tuner...but until then, if you have audio on your computer...

Even if you buy a Tuner, practice doing it by ear. It's not only a good skill to hone, but it helps understand the layout of the notes on the fretboard. But when you're holding up a group 'cause you're trying to tune by ear, you better have a quality tuner on hand.
