I was wondering are there any household items that can be used to polish up my instruments since I want to save as much money as I can to buy my first Fender Bass.

I just use an old T-shirt and some guitar polish I bought at a music store. It's not that expensive and it seems to last a long time. I don't know if I'd want to take a chance with a cleaning product meant for something in the house.

I use Zaino show car polish, not for everyone becasue it's a bit expensive. I use it on my car and it doesn't take too much of it for a guitar or bass. There's a swirl remover, polish and shine enhancer, use a soft cloth, works wonders. :)

I emailed the owner to see if it was safe for guitar finishes and he said yes, he uses it on his guitar collection .

A damp cloth never fails. A $10 bottle of Gibson Guitar Polish has lasted me since last year. And it's still good to use too! :D

I'm also of the old t-shirt and lots of arm motion camp. However, sometimes I sweat a lot and I'll find "water stains" on the guitar. In that case, I have a bottle of Gibson guitar polish -- a very small amount along with some serious t-shirt action and it's as good as new again.

Like one other poster, I too have had my bottle a long time. You only need a small amount and only when you find some crud or such that you can't just polish out by cloth alone.

As for household cleaners -- I wouldn't unless it's something made for quality wood furniture. While something like Windex (shudder!) might "clean" the surface, I don't even want to think about what's happening to the wood underneath.

Just be careful. Gentle. Attentive.

The physics of rubbing say, ANYTHING you use is somewhat abrasive, and most urethane finishes are only a few ten-thousandths of an inch thick.

Nitrocellulose ones are even thinner.

I have a bottle of Dunlop 56 (I think thats what it is called) guitar polish.. I've had this for a long time, maybe 10 years, I'm not sure? Does this stuff expire or is it ok to still use it?

A Dry or slughtly damp "Scotch Bright" Cloth works awesomely.

You can get Dollar store versions 3/1$ & they work better than anything else on CD's & Glass too!

I keep a dry one in my Case & just wipe before & after!
