hugh hefner playboy helped the beatnik scene here in chicago an area called old town(north avenue&wells street)still a popular area mostly boutique shops now then beautiful women(the original playboy mansion was only 3or4 blocks away)and alot of young guys chasing them i know i had a little apartment above a coffee house called the 'purple cow' a pretty big club called 'its here' had alot of the folk acts of the day, moving into the hippie groove was easy just grew a little more hair and the woman kept getting more attractive, thanks for the memories.

Hello JSJH,

A few weeks back I was trying to explain
the differances between Beatniks, hippies and Preppies.
At the same time he schooled me on emos and goths,

Only on Earth.{maybe}

Cheers.

Interestingly, just this week I was at a poetry group here in town that was featuring the works of four high school students who study with one of the group's founders. One young guy, who had just got his driver's license, is a Beat fanatic, he just finished reading On the Road for the third time, knows all the names of all the beats (and their aliases in the book), and writes in that same free-form style, but has made it all his own.

So, not to worry, there looks to be a new generation of Beats coming up soon...

Hey folks, this is a hair off topic, but please contribute if you know something.

Back from the late 40s through mid-60s, "beatniks" rose up as a new sub-species of $@!& sapiens and thrived, particularly in urban America.

Then came the simutaneous-sequential surf music / British Invasion / hippies / disco / hyper-produced sequin-country...

...and the beatniks were GONE.

Coffee houses and poetry slams are back, but American society tragically remains beatnik-less.

Where have all the hep cats gone?
They've become politicians!

You got that right. But they didn't inhale or they only tried it once!
Ya Me too

Thank you, esteemed e-colleagues, for your varied input-thoughts and especially the piccie of Maynard G. Krebs. Anyone have one of the couple in "Hairspray"?

Highly recommended reading hereon: "Hip: The History," John Leland, Harper Collins, 2004).

Quote of note: (Leland, p. 19) "...there is no hip without African-Americans and European Americans inventing new identities for thmselves as 'Americans' in each other's orbit."

Best remembered beatnik quote ('don't remember source): "Hippies were basically dopey suburban kids in stupid clothes trying desperately to be hip."
