There has been a definate increase in UK prices. I think your experiencing honest sellers not marking up old stock. They must know its a bad move.

Well if the increases are in USA's Foreign markets, as it seems to be mostly Canada, the UK, and other European countries, I'd say its gonna be trade agreements between countries that are flying under the News Hawks radars. Most of the increases I've noticed are on th MIM stuff, American made Fender Stuff actually seems to be decreasing. MIA Standards were around $1100 last year, only 999 now.

What are the prices of Burns and other UK brands doing?

Thats just new old stock selling for 999. look futher you will see 2009 prices are up big.

I' love to look, but where? Theres only one set of prices at GC, MF, Sam Ash, and even Aerican Musical Supply only have one set of prices. And thier MSRP reflects the current Fender MSRP. The 4 major online retailers don't have any 2009 models yet?

Theres will be going up as old stock goes out that why GC has many showing as outlet price and remember GC MF Music123 Woodwnd they are all the same company. Sweetwater raised theres last week and Elderly the other day our local store which is the largest dealer in Md. raised theres two weeks ago and they now match Best Buy, Sweetwater and Elderly. Its big. Sweetwater is still selling at both prices 999. and 1275. for American Standards and 399. and 549. for MIM 08' to 09'

As far as the MIM Standard goes, Fender says right on this site that that's due to Upgrades in Materials. That's the same at every online music site.

But I have to say it's starting to look bad with Sweetwaters prices. Maybe they're just setting us up for a Huge Sale that brings the prices back to normal. That happens all the time in Instrument Resale. But this feels like wishful thinking now. They need a nervous Emoticon.

Sounds like that when we see a price increase we need to double check that it is the NEW stock, and not the "left overs"

FYI for all, courtesy of some research via Fender:

http://admin.fender.com/resources/price ... ickref.pdf

Please note that the prices are MSRP (Manufacturers' Suggested Retail Price). Many stores do not charge full MSRP. If they do, they're just maximizing their profits--feel free to look elsewhere for a shop that doesn't do that.

Rickenbacker had similar price increases in December 2007, with a similar outcry. The difference is that Rickenbacker had a chronic backlog of orders (maybe they still do for all I know), and buyer demand exceeded supply at the time. I don't think that Fender has this problem across the board with all models, or with any for that matter.

My guess is that some dealers (especially the bulk dealers) haven't raised prices yet, because they may be reluctant to--and also being afraid of not being able to sell stock already on hand, due to the economy. That's just my guess. I've been checking around, there's quite a few 'Full-Range' (read: they sell practically the full Fender range including Custom Shop, too) dealers who have changed their prices to fit the new price list immediately, regardless of whether the guitars they have are old stock or not.

I don't buy into the theory that you can justify massive price increases due to 'upgrades' and 'improvements'. There's a term for that, it's called 'planned obsolescence'. I think 'improvements' are what got Fender and Gibson into quality control troubles in the 1970's and '80's.

If anyone has the book 'Fender Amps: The First Fifty Years' by John Teagle and John Sprung, check this out--it points out that Fender raised prices significantly (at least on amps, probably on everything else, too) in 1970, only to roll back prices due of the consumer outcry/lousy sales in 1971. It's not just mentioned in the book, it's in the INDEX, the old price lists are in the book, too. It looks like Deja Vu all over again. 8)

We are not talking about used deals on Fender Strats. I am talking about New street prices. There are several companies that I will not name that charge prices in excess of said new Strat prices. These companies offer inferior products and continue to sell them. Maybe not at the rate Fender makes sales however there is a market demand. From a artists perspective I would be willing to pay 1400 for what I am used to playing. There is a known quality behind the name. Not to mention beyond satisfactory customer service and warranty.

I (like most) have seen American Strats go for 500. That used deal of a price is unrelated to the current MSRP.

Fender has raised their prices in the past and they have survived. I am wiling to bet that they have a understanding about possible repercussions from this price increase. I believe that they have definitive reasons behind this price increase. I would like to believe they were not in a room giggling and decided to stick it to the customers, lets give them more credit than that. After all there is a reason why everyone reading this is on THIS site. The Fender name. Trust them.

Take this for what it is for. One mans opinion.

For Fender I wonder if such a large increase is in need for cash on hand. The musical instrument business has enjoyed both good time and bad in the past.

Not withstanding debate about exact percentages and the date of increases it is clear from all the posts here that prices for new Fenders are going up significantly. When inflation rates are generally low and when the world economy is in massive trouble this is peculiar timing.

We have no idea what state Fender's finances are in. Sometimes big companies can weather storms better than small ones, sometimes the bigger they are the harder they fall. Enough other examples of that in the economy at present.

Late 2007 Fender bought Kaman Music Corporation. At the time there was much ironic delight, because back in the early '80s Kaman were in negotiations to purchase Fender from CBS for a very small $15m: a tiny fraction of the company's worth today. The deal fell through.

However, over amitious takeovers are a classic way for large companies to founder when times turn bad. Perhaps the debt incured in that purchase has now become difficult to service. Cvilleira's suggestion that Fender may be very short of ready cash is a compelling one.

In the present economy nothing can be taken for granted, not even the survival of seemingly impregnable famous brands...

Cheers - C

I was just shopping around for a new Epi or Gibby Les Paul or 335 and I noticed a peculiar thing, Epis and Gibby's Prices have been creeping up while we're micro-analyzing Fenders Market Flux, just about all the other guitar companies have raised thier prices too. By quite a bit.

I'm just saying, let's not take any of these great companies for granted. We moan and gripe over some of their product decisions, and especially price increases. But we'd sure miss 'em if they were gone!

Let's all go and buy a Fender from a small independent music store. What better contribution to getting the economy going again?

Cheers - C

(PS Now can I have that place in the Fender Boardroom, please?)

Right now it's actualy easier for the Mom and Pop companies to stay afloat than the Larger companies. A small independently owened store can cut an unpoular supplier, lay off one worker instead of 15,000. The face of their business stays the same and costomers keep coming. If guitar Center wants to stop selling Dean or Danelectros, everyone would notice and it would look like it's in trouble. Lay off 1500 employees and close a couple stores, everyone knows you're in trouble now, plus you're demonized for putting folks out of work. You're so damn big that even if every guitar player in the country that can afford a guitar bought at your stores you'd have to close stores.

I do agree however that in this time of economic uncertainty we should support our Mom's and Pop's. If a large company goes under, it'll be replaced by another large company. If the small one goes under, it's replaced by Graffiti and a Donut Store. If I had to choose fates, Guitar Center would get the Romish Thumbs Down.

It's funny, I heard from family that the 'Mom & Pop' music store in my old hometown (population 5000, down from 6500 20 years ago) bit the dust, literally. It and a few neighboring businesses got bulldozed in the main business district of this town, to be replaced by yet another bank parking lot (same bank already HAD bulldozed 1/4 of the same block for--you guessed it--a parking lot). The bank isn't THAT prosperous, and unfortunately my old hometown sure isn't prosperous anymore. First it was the Interstate bypassing traffic, then it was Wal-Mart. The main business in that town is (besides Wal-Mart) now fast food restaurants and antique shops. It's not likely that a new music store will ever get re-established there on the Main Street, not any more than any other business would.

Back to topic: I don't mind if price increases are incremental, a few percentage points, and happening every year--I expect that, current economic climate or not, especially since that's usually common practice as well as history. But when they are double-digit increases practically across the board, without any particular reason, then I think it's difficult NOT to take notice, and that forces me to reassess my expenditures regarding where I can get the most bang for my buck. Like has been said before here, the easiest way to get someone's attention is to vote with your wallet.

My jaw droped to the floor yesterday, I went to visit my favorite Fender dealer and kick some tires.

The guys stoped me at the counter and said 'have you seen the new Fender prices".

I nearly died right there, these guys are truely heart broken and wondering how in the world they will survive.

Lets see massive unemployment, idiot government leadership giving kickbacks in the billions of dollars to special interests groups instead of helping people and so you raise prices on some guitar models that exceed $200.00 and even $300 dollars in increase.

Really Fender ?????

I don't think Leo or Don would be happy.

Not all musicians are rich folk ya know.

I haven't forgotten, Ceri, but it's a little more difficult than I thought. I need to practice the Mando part a bit more.
