I was under the impression that they were. I could be wrong of course. If they aren't then (IMO) the price hike, and their regular prices before the increase, are even farther out of line.

Well, after having earlier vented, I now feel better. Found a mexican strat for the $449 price before they hit $549 at Guitar Center. Couldn't put it down before heading off to work ... funny how a new guitar will do that to you 8)

This is probably the best response I have heard regarding the Fender price increase on another forum:
I'm constantly amazed when folks scream and stomp and tear their hair out over price increases, particularly in a case like this, where the company involved, Fender, has quite obviously been selling its merchandise for LOW prices for several years.

What makes low prices profitable? Volume sales.

What kills that kind of profit? Economic slowdown.

What is the world economy in the middle of right now?

To be outraged when a company adjusts to the market conditions is to be wasting a lot of angst for no good reason...

So quit whining on how a luxury item has increased in price, as far as I know, as much as you think you may, you will not die if you have to wait a bit longer to get a new guitar...

Certainly the most sensible reasoning i've heard on the subject. And i'm a whiner

It's a sad commentary on the Human Condition when all we are expected to complain about is Death!

"If it doesn't Kill you, shut up and take it." ?????? I don't think so. Complaisancy is one of the "Qualities" that put us in an Economic Crisis. And while Whining about Guitars may not help, in and of itself, we must complain and do something both. And please stop calling the Socially Conscious "Whiners!" It just pisses people off. Dissagree all you want, but name calling is getting old! Really OLD! It's called "Complaining", not "Whining" and the ones doing the complaining are called "Consumers" not "Whiners".

Fender had better listen to those Consumer Complaints, even if they're powerless to prevent the problem, they had better listen to the Consumer.

Personally,
I don't think Fender is to blame, it seems that the Retailers have raised prices, as the MSRP hasn't budged, just the asking prices. Fender's aren't the only products with higher prices, Ibanez and Gibson too. But Squier and Epiphone have stayed pretty steady.

well, as we all know, the economy is in pretty bad shape.

Think about it this way: would you rather have a 30% price increase, or let Fender go bankrupt? I mean sure, that's a long way off, but they still need to make a profit.

Hopefully the recession will be over in a year or two.

The recession may be over eventually but I'm sure fender won't lower their prices back, There must be a way to tighten their belts without compromising quality, There is no way I feel a MIM is worth $1000 +
I love Fender since the early 80's and have never strayed from their Bass Guitars even if I did have to buy a couple of Mexican made and Korean made 6 string Guitar,
This is the Same Thinking Harley Davidson has and it's backfiring on them,

I was Just about to buy one of the Aerodine P Basses and the price just went up about $250 Bucks! , Damn I should of purchased it 2 months ago Like I wanted, I guess I really don't need another bass guitar,
I am positive people will still buy, There are people out there that don't feel the Nations crunch right now but as for an average Joe with a family I have to make a choice if I really need it! Do I? I have a few already How many do I really need? I guess I will just spend the money on something else because without any heat from the Mrs. I cannot justify the increase in prices to make myself Buy Another Bass,
How many out there feel the same?

The best post so far. Too bad it took 8 pages of comments to get there. The truth of the matter is that you cannot have much less justify such an overnight price increase. And it will prevent a whole bunch of people, the people to whom the mexican and the american standard series targets to, from buying any new Fender products, because these are the people who have been mostly hit by the recession. Inflation is at an all time low. A 30% price increase makes absolutelly no sense.

I have always wanted a Fender American but since the price hike... I decided to look at something else. So I bought a new Squier HSS with Duncan pickups and die cast tuners. It sounds better than a Mexi Strat and a Standard Fender Strat. But, buying American Fender is but a pipe dream now. Plus I have been looking at other companies like Schecter. The most expensive Schecter is the same price as just a low end American Fender. Plus I mean you get EMGs and Grover Tuners already on them. I mean Schecter is using EMGs on most of their newer models. Anyways.... all I can say is.... I don't know. I pretty much help Best Buy sell guitars though I don't actually work there. I just go in everyday. Nothing else to do. Anyways... the whining and complaining of the prices are getting old. There are other companies out there. Like I did mention Schecter, but that was just an observation.
