Since I didn't see any threads in regards to this, I thought I'd start one myself.

Upon first logging into Fender.com today an article caught my attention...you can read the full story at...

http://www.fender.com/news/index.php?di ... rticle=295

I just wanted to take a moment and say that I think it's about time! So many people own and play Fender instruments (and amps of course) and the "Strat" in my mind is perhaps the single greatest icon associated with modern music (sorry Gibson owners)....it's about time that Leo himself got some major recognition for this. As much as the players who made his creations famous such as Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Steve Cropper, James Burton and an endless list of others, the music world today owes a great debt to Leo Fender.

Not only as a guitar player and a musician, but as a person who enjoys building and working on guitars and as a "tinkerer" myself, Leo Fender has long been one of my personal hero's if you will. In my rather long list of people who I would love to meet and talk with (both living and dead) including Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Pete Townsend, David Gilmore, Eratosthenes and a great many others, Leo Fender ranks in the top five. I've read a great many things over the years about the man and the company he created and I have always found him to be a wonderful source of inspiration. He always struck me as a man I would have truly enjoyed knowing. Inventive, curious, frugal, practical...a man after my own heart. I know there were a great many other contributing individuals and factors to Leo's success, but at the heart of it all was Leo himself and we truly owe so much to this one gifted and insightful individual.

Anyways, congrats to Leo, his family and the company and instruments he created for this wonderful award. Now...how about a lifetime achievement award for the man? :D.

Peace,
Jim

Hi Lomitus: plenty of appreciation of Leo round here, rest assured!

Under the influence of Pete Townshend in the '70s my original conception of an electric guitar was as a Wine Red Les Paul. However, like so many I plumped for a cheap Strat-type as a first electric - and from that moment on began the journey of admiration for all the little details and innovations of that instrument that make it Number One to my ears and fingers.

So much to pay tribute to Leo Fender for - and the rest of his team. Starting with Freddie Tavares. Let's not forget, Leo didn't do it all on his own...

Cheers - C

yes, kudos to Leo. Without him, rock and blues culture would have never been the same.

thank you for the heads up, i'm so sorry i did'nt remember that Mr. Fender had passed on. his electric guitars and amplifiers have meant so much to me for so long i guess that i took it for granted he would be with us forever and ever. love love love Leo.

That's cool--but, part of this bothers me-

Quote:
The award will be presented to Fender’s widow, Phyllis Fender, at a special ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, followed by an announcement made during the CBS telecast of the 51st annual Grammy® Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles at 8 p.m.

AN announcement will be made on the telecast version--but what sort of announcement will be made? Will it just be a, "last night at a separate ceremony the following were honored"? Or will there be some sort expanded mention of Leo? Maybe a Fender playing musician or two speaking about it or something.

I hope there's something more than just a simple announcement.

There's a respectable observation. Don't hold any hopes out for a significant stage presentation of all the current music superstars who play or use Fender gear. That would disrespectful to a great deal of the idiocy which too often attempts to pass itself off as entertainment during that event.

The Stratocaster has already won an industrial design award for the 20th century.

In this forum, you will find Leo's greatest tribute, and his legacy.

Doc
