Really suggest you wait till she's 10/12 she'll understand the value and the delicate concentration that guitar playin' needs!! :D

I started at about 17.

But I got my son started a 6. I really wish my parents would have encouraged me at that age... As it was, they hated me playing guitar for quite a while. It was too loud, or took away from school, blah blah blah (insert lame excuse).

If my kid wants to play guitar, cool. Drums, cool. Whatever the instrument, I'm ok with that. And haven for bid the sin of now instruments... Well I'm OK with that too.

I started bass at 15. I just started my youngest son with guitar at 10, and it seems like he's ready. I started my daughter at guitar at 8, and she didn't have the discipline to practice at that age. She regrets it now that she's 20.

i'd recommend between 11 and thirteen. guitar takes a lot of practice and commitment (also strong fingers especially with an acoustic) also an long attention span. until then though i'd recommend piano at about 5 or 6 (thats when i started) it's an easier instrument to start especially for kids. then by the time she's old enough to play guitar she'll be able to read music and have a good sense of rythm and melody. believe me, it's been helpful knowing how to play piano when learning guitar.

good luck!

I started my journey with the guitar taking lessons at New York City's Alegro Studios when I was about 10 yrs. old. I am now giving my own 10 yr. old lessons myself. I remember in the beginning, when I was just learning basics, and not playing anything that sounded like a song yet, it was very boring to me at the time. The basics, of course, must be learned. However, I teach my daughter an easy song once in a while, and it really keeps her interested!
