I have a nephew who is 7 and his attention span is lousy, yet he thinks he wants to play the guitar. He says his uncle (thats me) is cool because he plays guitar. I tried sitting with him to show him very basics... then he starts jumping around with his guitar in his hands thinking he is playing. All he is right now is a wanna be, with no seriousness for the instrument. Maybe when he is 15 he'll get it.

I have to say though, it all depends on the child, some can start at a very early age.

My son is 5 and both I and his mother play, but I think he's too young for a guitar. He has alot of interest in it, as with all music. I got him a starter drumkit and taught him some basics for his fourth B-day and he's gotten really good at keeping time and can hold a steady rock beat for quite awhile. He always asks to fiddle with my P basses and I let him now and then, I mean what's he gonna hurt , right? However, I think a guitar is a bit complicated and delicate for someone under the age of 8 to be messing with. Though, there are some kids who have the patience to do it.

I think around 10 or 11 would be a good age. That is the age that schools start to get kids involved with with musical instruments.

I have a neighbor who is a teacher in elementary education. One issue with younger kids is they are still developing hand-eye coordination (so are some adults I know, lol). In my neighbor's pre-school class, as an exercise, she had them "dissect" this huge sunflower I'd grown and donated with tweasers and move the seeds to paper cups, for instance.

With a younger kid and a guitar, I'd want to wait until they are physically ready to span the frets and work both hands at the same time .... sort of like you would for a bass player (<---- runs and hides) ..... get them a downsized instrument. If you visit YouTube, you can find remarkable video clips of little kids working the neck of a guitar like a master.

I'd have to say a 4 year old probably lacks the dexterity necessary to play a guitar. You can get a cheap ax and try to teach her a few notes to see if she's into the process. If not no biggie. There's always later. Just hide the guitar since it's not a toy and probably won't last the 6 years that will pass before she's ready.

In my experience, most kids don't start to develop the dexterity or concentration to learn how to play a guitar till around 10 years old.

I believe that 4 or 5 is too young to learn the guitar. I also believe that the personality of the person is the true determination as to when to start. Some kids at 7 or 8 are good players, while others can't keep focused. As in anything, let the child decide what he wants to do and when. Even if they do not keep up with it, they gave it a shot and may end up pikcing it up later in life when they are more interested and focused.

I started playing at 52 and I am 54...tried when I was in the 4th grade, took lessons along with my sister but it was too hard and I didn't want to practice. Now all I do is practice..
