The other night my wife and i were watching the Superbowl Halftime show and she leaned over to me and asked sincerely:

"Is that wear on Bruce Springsteens guitar real? or did Fender do that for him?"

I was amazed at the question, and immediately laughed my a** off. I forget how perceptive my wife is being the wife of a guitarist.

i don't remember telling her about the Road Worn series but i guess i did.

I like how at the beginning, he threw it to a roadie, who just "barely" caught it before is smashed on the stage :)

People don't realise that the first prototype esquires were 1 pickup, then they did a short production run a couple months later, and only for a short time with 2 pickups, before switching back to a single pick up for what eventually became the full production Esquire.

But according to all sources Bruces' is either a 52 or a 53 single pickup model modded for a second.

Got a feeling the early ones could of been routed for 2 pickups. Can anyone verify that?

Well, since they divided the line into the Esquire, and Broadcaster/Telecaster line, the only visible differences were the 2nd pickup. Given Fenders production practices, it might be possible they used the exact same body for both at times.

Sort of like, the black over sunburst paintjobs. Some say it was intentional, but i think it was more likely botched bursts, that were easier to paint black than to fix.

I love Bruce's dedication to the Telecaster. He has the money to play ANY guitar, but has played his ole' Fender for years, and has earned the wear and tear as shown on the face of his beloved guitar, just like the wear on his own face.

Real life wear & tear...as we will all experience if you grow old...it beats the alternative.

I would like to think that I have earned my gray hairs along with my scars on the tools of my trade.

I always wonder, do stores ever sell BLEMS or B-stocks of relic guitars, or do they just put them back out on the floor for brand new because who can tell whether it was scratched at the factory for the finish, or if some numbskull messed it up more...

YES !! I couldn't believe he threw the guitar! I thought it was going down. Hope it's insured . . . just in case he isn't as lucky next time!

If you send the guitar back to the store they call it a scratch and dent instead of just writing used.....
