I was too poor to hear anything but AM radio and depending on the weather, an FM station that played a lot of sub-genres.
Other than that, the only clue to a larger musical world was the usual variety of magazines such as Creem, Rolling Stone, Guitar Player and Hit Parade.

So, there are numerous artists whose names I barely remember, a lot of tracks that I have yet to discover.

Its not enough to mention the artist unless you can identify those signature tracks that are part of the collective memory. In other words, the tracks that made them famous.

So, if you have a favorite artist, let us know who he/she is, and let us know about those signature tracks that unmistakedly identify his/her sound.

While I have a great many favorite artists and even more who have influenced my playing to some degree, to narrow it down to just a few I think it would have to be Pete Townsend of The Who for his raw power (ala "My Generation", "Won't Get Fooled Again", etc), Eric Clapton for his feel and interpretation of the blues ("Cocaine", "Hideaway" and later work such as "Old Love") and David Gilmore of Pink Floyd for his sound, use of effects and his phrasing ("Comfortably Numb", "Dogs", "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", etc). While my whole list of "influences" is far to great to list here, those are the "top 3" and are the people who I try to emulate the most with my own playing.

Alrighty, I hope that made some sense! LOL!

Peace,
Jim

Going back to the early sixties. The Yardbirds had a signature lead guitar sound that interested me greatly. Whether it be Clapton or Beck, could be something to do with the Tele that the Yardbirds rented to their guitarists.
However, ' Got To Hurry ' was one of the first instrumentals I learned, I was probably about 15 at the time. In the group that I played with, everything was figured by 'ear' so that's how I did that.
We learned to hear notes and chords in our head, before the fretboard and that as been useful to this day.
That tune, by the way came in useful a few years later, I used it as a solo in some Taj Mahal thing, funny how things can lend themselves in other places.
If you notice, many guitarists when playing live, borrow from previous riffs they have done in the past and occasionally a few other standard riffs get thrown in.
Clapton, Beck, Page, they all do it. Anyway theirs was a signature sound that I liked back in the early days.
Still is.
Cheers....... :D

Clapton, Page & SRV with their base in the blues Pentatonic scales was probably my biggest influence in lead playing. I played acoustic from the 60's through the 70's and didn't get my first electric until the 80's when I was in the Navy, (a strat copy made by Hondo). In those days Heavy Metal was king. Bands like Queenryche, Scorpions, Warrior, Judas Priest and Rush with their fanfare'ish leads that defined true Heavy Metal of the day was a strong influence in my playing style on the electric.
