His Humble Pie work, to me ,was his best. He and Steve Marriot were smokin hot. Saw them on numerous occasions in the very early 70's. 8) Mike

My older sister got "Frampton Comes Alive" for Christmas when we were young, and I have loved that album ever since. It was also the start of my love affair with....Gasp......the Gibson Les Paul Custom!!!!!! Yes Fender fans, I DO love the Black Beauty, and I am not afraid to admit it. The tone Frampton gets on that album is truly awesome.

That was back in the day when Disco seemed to be replacing Rock on the radio. I like Disco more today for its nostagic value, but back then I absolutely hated it. Frampton Comes Alive made me believe that neither Rock nor the guitar were dead just yet.

BTW - His talk box and a LP Black Beauty are on display at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, FL.

Let's see--according to a little online research, Klum was born in 1973-the year this song was first released on a studio album. The live version came out in 76--so either you & Frampton are potential in big trouble, or you didn't hear it when it was first released.
(Or, in reality, you just made that up--let's go with that one and laugh about it.)

I'm beginning to see why it was suggested to me that things are getting a bit 'tacky' around here. As you suggest in parentheses: Often better not to dignifiy those kinds of responses with a rebuttal.

I remember quite well. I said to myself, "Self, Oh, he stole Joe Walsh's Talk Box invention and now he's trying to capitalize on it." And, "I hope this gimmick doesn't catch on because I can't stand the sound of the thing."

Suggest you Google 'talk box' and go to the Wikepedia post on the development of that device. Joe Walsh does not appear in that history.

Hi Doc! Thanks for the idea to Google "Talk Box". I didn't really know much about the history of the device. When I was in high school we used to refer to it as a "Magic Bag", though, I see the Wiki article calls it simply "The Bag". Years later after actually seeing one, I wondered how it got its name because it didn't look like a bag at all. Now I see it was a different device altogether. The Frampton unit at the Seminole Hard Rock is a Heil.

Like jayro, the first time I can recall hearing the Talk Box was in Joe Walsh's "The Rocky Mountain Way" from his album The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get released in mid-1973, well before Frampton's live album. I can't believe Walsh wasn't even mentioned. I guess he didn't invent it, but I heard a story years ago that he built his own unit from some plastic tubing and an old grocery store PA amp.

The article mentioned the Sonovox, also. I remember that from AM radio jingles. Geez, I guess I am old.

For those of you who weren't around for the golden age of AM radio, PAMS of Dallas has a great site. (For whatever reason, the commercial radio jingle business seemed to have centered in Dallas, TX. I guess it was the availability of expertise.) The link below provides some Sonovox samples, but the site itself is a peek in to '60s radio. Hope you enjoy.

I was merely answering the OP's question. That was the 'folklore' going around back then as Walsh was virtually the only one using it. I soon after became aware that it wasn't Walsh's invention. Rather, he simply concocted a home made one. Either way, it is of no relevance to me but thanks for pointing it out.
