So I bought a new guitar this week, in a new town, at a store I had never been to, and when I got it home the switch was not 100% and the neck pick up kept cutting in and out.

This was a Squier Affinity Tele that had been on discount...I wonder why?? So I expected to not get an American Deluxe Tele, but for the price it was a great way to get into the Tele universe. There were other setup issues as well(fret buzz, intonation, loose knobs). The neck was ok and there were no sharp frets so I figured what the heck, and it sounded ok and figured maybe turn it into a little project later.

I took it back immediately and was told no problem and they would do the setup as the same time as the wiring repair. As soon as I got it back even though the guy said he did a setup, it was clear that he had not. So I figured what the heck I can do this...and with my handy laptop, Google, and a little confidence, the setup got finished and I must say it sounds fantastic.

A couple questions for people out there though...how often do you do a full setup? or do you just periodically check things individually when they seem "out of whack"?

Also, even though I am pretty happy with it right now, I would like to make it a little more hardcore for rock and blues and was thinking of putting in SD 1/4 pounders. I was also thinking of the SCN Fenders.(Guess I'll be learning to solder as well) Any opinions on these pickups?

Ok you unleashed the screwdriver and allenwrench. Your next lesson is that 'the adjustements never end'. Believe me, your always going to be thinking 'oh this could do with sorting' or, 'what if i tried that'.

Myself i say every 6 months. The reality of it is end of summer and begining of spring.

All the best mate good luck with the toolbox. :D

Congrats on doing your first setup.

I take a look at my setup every string change. I make adjustments twice a year at the beginning of spring and fall.

Wish I had the guts to try and set my Tele up. It plays pretty good straight out of the box but I'm sure it could be better. I'm just worried I'll make it worse! Hmm. Maybe next string change...

Yeah, I have been doing my setups at those times of year for a few years now. I had noticed a change in neck relief then.

Those biscuits look good!
