I decided to take a chance and put together a Strat from pieces parts. I decided to use eBay to get the parts that I wanted in a Stratocaster.

- 60's style hardtail body
- Inca Silver
- 60's style rosewood neck (large C with Med. to Med/Jumbo frets)
- 3-ply white pickguard with 60's style pickups
- silver chrome accents

It took about a month to find, bid and win all the parts. It sounds like this would be a lot of hassle, but it was really a good learning experience. I learned a lot about the different styles of Strats in the process.

I ended up with the following:

- body from a Robert Cray Signature Strat in Inca Silver with minor buckle marks on the back only.
- white 3-ply loaded pickguard from 60 Japanese RI Stratocaster
- hardtail bridge from a Robert Cray Strat
- 60's style rosewood MIM neck with one extremely small ding on the back around the 8th fret

I put on some D'Addario XL110 (.10/.46) and played it for the first time this week. I can say I am very pleased with the look and feel. The sound is really nice through my 63' Princeton too. Maybe it's partly because I was really involved in "putting" it together. Sure I could have went to a store and tried a bunch of guitars on the wall and dropped $500 to $1000. By building a guitar from pieces parts I was able to get the things I wanted and also save about $300 to $400.

I know a lot of people feel negatively towards the eBay stores that disassemble complete guitars to sell individual pieces. I took this opportunity to "recycle" and build the guitar I wanted. Another instrument has been reassembled. :D

I will post some pics as soon as I get a chance.

- Tim

I did the same with one of mine. I love how it came out. I love this guitar because I picked everything for it my self, and I did all the wiring myself. It is a good feeling of accomplishment.

Thanks everyone!

Last night I really cranked up the volume and noticed a really unique sound while playing. I'm used to sounds from Strats with a trem (even a blocked trem). This one has a different sound/tone. Nice and full with a unique resonance. 8) It can be bright using the bridge, but switch to the neck or neck/middle and it gets really strong and deep on the bottom-end.

If you really like the Strat sound and don't use the trem, but long for more bottom-end, check out the hardtails. I think I'm going to like this guitar. :D

I'll get some pictures up tonight.

Thanks,

Tim

It looks very nice and you describe it as playing well and sounding great.

Those 3 things to me - not in that particular order - describe great guitars.

Congrats.

Thanks for the feedback. The guitar tech said there are some frets that are uneven and the neck was a little warped. Hey, the neck was from a MIM guitar. :) He was able to correct the neck with a truss rod adjustment. He also said he would like the guitar for himself. :D

It also has some small dings (character), which helps with my mindset that it's been played and "needs" to be played more and not just kept in it's case.

Nice idea. I have always wanted to build a fretless J and maybe a 'Tractor' bass. Maybe that'll be my next project.
