Sound techs tend to use any left over mic on my amp. :? A "cheap vocal mic draped over the cab" is not my idea of a good situation. So, I'm going to buy my own. Any suggestions?

I use a Shure SM57, it sounds good to me.

I use a CAD GXL2200 or a GXL1200 depending on which one sounds best at the time, and an AKG vocal mic, then mix the two down to one track.

The Shure SM57. It's THE classic mic for amps.

Pair of Audix i5s for stereo mix, and Sterling Audio ST59 for room.

Thanks for the suggestions. Anyone tried the Sennheiser e906?

I would love to use any mic on my amp...the youth pastor where I go to church at hates electric instruments so he isn't about to let any 1 of 4 guitarists (and bassist included in the 4) be mic'd. :?

I mic my guitar with a lot of mics: sa couple large-diaphragm condensers that all work well, sometimes a EV RE-27.

But they are always used in a multi-mic set-up, and I always have a Shure SM-57 on the speaker. Nothing but a small dynamic up against the grille provides the presence and high-mid "bite" we all think of as the sound of an electric guitar, and while there are several choice for that role, the 57 is still my fave.

I used to use an SM-57 until I tried a Sennheiser e906. I like this mic a lot better with the features that the Shure doesn't have along with the flat profile :

Rocker_Gamma,
With your AVT50 half-stack, you don't necessarily "need" to be mic'd. There are disadvantages to mic-ing: a bad sound tech can hide you in the mix. And some tech's are into control--constantly having you turn down until you find your AVT50 is on 1--then there's the problem with hearing yourself over the drummer.

At my church (see my web site) I use a PodXt direct to PA. Three services, we usually seat 650, 750, 300. Our PA is top notch, and the monitor system has individual mixes so hearing myself is never a problem. If that wasn't enough, our sound tech is awesome with many years working professional concerts and as a U.S.A.F. sound tech. These are truly blessings. :D

BUT, when I play out--even for crowds of 40--I use an 18 watt amp, turn it on 5 to 10, and mic it to shoot the sound throughout the room. My amps are the Atomic 112 (www.atomicamps.com) and the Fender 65 Princeton RI.

Regards,

I use a GLS Audio ES-57. It's closest you get to a Shure SM-57 without actually having one. And they make an ES-58 too!!!

I've used a lot. Although I'm sure you can get a better, more accurate one, I'm happy with just a Sure SM57, on a mini stand, pointed a little off center to the Celestion speaker on my Rectoverb.

A lot has the do with the sound guy too, as well as the monitors. You might get a great monitor sound on the stage, but what the audience hears is crap, and vice versa. I really don't like wireless units for a lot of reasons, but I've been thinking of getting ones just to go out in the audience area for sound checks to hear what they will hear.
