Owners gently weep at rash of ax thefts

There must be a rock band out there in serious need of some new strings.

In recent months, police in several New Jersey towns have noticed an unusual number of burglaries involving more than $11,000 worth of expensive guitars with brand names like Fender, Gretsch, Ibanez, Martin, Schecter and Squire.

...

Carlucci said officers in Montclair have been scouring websites like eBay and Craigslist to see whether the guitars are being re sold. The three departments are also working to determine whether the victims shared anything in common, such as membership in online music forums, he said.

This doesn't sound too good - especially the last paragraph.

Yikes, that's pretty scary. These guitars were stolen from residences, sometimes while the people were home (some victims were beat up while having their gear stolen), and stolen guitars include relatively modest gear like 500 dollar Fender Strats and a Squire Telecaster.

I had my own Martial Arts Club and taught hand to hand combat to the Green Berets during the Vietnam era. If thieves want my guitars, they have to get past me first.

Consider the possiblity that the information is coming from vendor employees or third party employee sources like credt cards, similar to identity theft.

How would one's name and address be made available off a site such as this one under the security format presently in place?

I wouldn't take this too lightly. I've had gear ripped off and believe me, it's a horrible feeling!

Thanks for the heads up, Gil.

I understand everyone feels pretty safe with their own security precautions at home, but according to the they did overwhelm 5 guys in an appartment.

"In Roselle Park, a group of brazen thieves wearing ski masks entered an unlocked apartment, which was occupied by five males at the time, and assaulted two of the residents by repeatedly hitting and kicking them, police said. By the time officers responded, $7,000 worth of gui tars were gone, including a Schecter Diamond series, a Gretsch Tennessee Rose and a Gretsch Black Falcon. Police noted the group left behind other valuable electronics. "

Hopefully they will track this back to some particular forum (or perhaps these were all items for sale on Ebay and they got the sellers address somehow?) so we know where the info came from. In the mean time, I hope yall in New Jersey can stay safe.

[quote="kayatai"]: The fact that this gear was present at that particular location had to have become public knowledge in some fashion, in order for that to have occurred.

You're welcome. It doesn't matter how expensive or in-expensive a piece of gear is - when it's ripped off - you get impacted. I've never lost gear, but the house I owned in Edison, NJ back in the '70s was robbed when I was at work - I lost some irreplaceable items.

As far as the guitars and gear getting ripped off - I would be looking at where did all of these folks shop for their gear ? One might find something/place/person in common.

I'm glad to be of some assistance.

I hide my favourite guitars when i go out for more than a few hours. If i go away for days they go to my moms (some 100 miles away).

Mind you i have been known to check the front door 3 times before driving away to go to the supermarket.

Paranoia does age you, but it keeps you safe.

We have a very low crime rate where I live. We also have an ususally high number of Gun Owners (according to a study done by the NRA about 5 years ago, there's an average of 3 Guns per House Hold in my area). We also heve very deep mine shafts.
