As I am sure most of you are aware, on Feb 3, 1959 a single prop engine plane crashed near Clear Lake Iowa killing Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson. I think it would be nice to mark the occasion to have a moment of silence during one of your sets for a fellow Fender player taken far before his time.

I forget ... who bet with Buddy Holly to get on the plane and lost, having to ride to the next gig by bus? Somebody really famous...

It's either Waylon Jennings or Kris Kristofferson if my memory serves me correct..... I believe it's Waylon ( I know he's a country guy ).

It was Waylon and he often said that it messed him up for many years.

Incidentally, the FAA report (pilot error) can still be read. But the gist is that the pilot had failed his instrument rating twice and was in a plane where the artificial horizon worked exactly the opposite of that in the plane he'd trained on. The FAA concluded that the increasingly heavy snow quickly disoriented him and in an attempt to do a steep climb, he did just the opposite. The plane hit the ground running at high speed.

The owner was somewhat at fault because he'd last checked the weather earlier that afternoon. The night was supposed to be bitterly cold but clear. On that basis, he assigned Peterson, who needed flight hours. Peterson had a fair amount of flight time and he probably could have handled a clear night over land (dark sky, high contrast snow covered ground). But in the end, it was Peterson's call and he never should have taken the plane up.

Sub-conclusion: charter planes and musicians (think Skynard) may be like oil and water.

There were a few other things that were screwy about that night & that tour.

I didn't know that info on the pilot and reasons for the crash. As interesting as it is sad for all involved.

Kind of sounds like the JFK JR crash too, the pilot overestimates his skills out of pride or just inexperience and it's all over.

You can't pull the plane to the side of the road when you have a problem!

The Randy Rhoads accident also had a "Pilot error"... the pilot had lost his license just day or days before the accident.

Sympathies for all the musicians who have died in tragic accidents, some of my friends have gone that way.
But music doesn't die.....it moves on....and so must we.
Remember by all means and indeed we should.....and I do.
I have lots of memories....to all our absent friends...Peace.

You beat snowy with your wiseness. No offense intende snowy.
Therefore I will have a minute of silence and consideration for ALL musicians who have died.

Thanks Jerm, you have a wise head on young shoulders.
I see you being a valued member of the Fender forum, indeed I see
you as that now. You're a good guy.
But Snowy's a cool dude, lets not take anything away from him.
Rock on kid...remember those that have gone and you take it on.
Peace and goodwill........ 8)

Although tragic as it was, Randy Rhoads had the pilot "buzz" the tour bus. They did twice but on the third attempt the wing clipped the tour bus causing the crash killing Rhoads, Rachel Youngblood and the pilot.

Stupidity killed them more than anything.

Somehow there is no way that my mind can get used to the loss of such persons. I will still be thinking even in 100 years that Buddy Holy, Jimi Hendrix, SRV and many others are alive..... Just retired somewhere and play for themselves and for good company ...

Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Big Bopper, as well as other great musicians will never be forgotten. To me they are all still alive through their music.
