All depends who's playing it I guess. If it was me I don't think it'd matter what I was playing through, it'd sound as rough as.

Seriously though, it really depends what kind of tones YOU like and how you set them up. I've watched guys in small clubs play with nothing more than a Cube Amp and a stomp box and they've sounded awesome.

Personally I like the sound of Fender amps for blues (and general stuff) and Marshall for heavy rock.

I like Fender for the Reverb and "Crisp-ness". Marshall has more Midrange, Sustain and Thicker Overdrive, which is also really nice, but I'd have to get a Fender reverb tank if I had a MArshall. I don't like Onboard Digital Effects, so Marshalls with built in Fender-like Reverb settings don't get-r-done. Plus I'm more of a 212 combo guy, and Fenders are where that's at, Marshall (to me) sounds best when it's a Head thru a 412 cabinet.

All that aside, one of my Favorite Blues amps is my old Pignose Crossmix 150 (150 watt Pignose from about 1979 or 80). It has a very Marshall-like voice and decent Spring Reverb. It's a 112 solid state combo that weighs about as much a Three of todays 112 combos. But I love that Thang.

Blues is in your hands. Any guitar and any amp can (and has) been used to create great blues music.

And are you talking a Hot Rod Deluxe, a blackface Deluxe, a 5E3 tweed? They're all pretty different amps.

Have you checked out a Blues Junior? I play a Highway One with CS Tx Spc pickups and a good setup. It's got incredible tone through the BJ, from clean to a very beautifully overdriven sound with the fat switch in and gain up around 11 1/2 - 12. There's unlimited sustain with the reverb down to nothing, but it's got a sweet bite to it with depth that I just am not hearing elsewhere. It's a very clean amp even with volume up at 11/12. Clapton helped make Marshall famous, but he's playing Fender amps now.

In general terms, I think you need an amp that gets the best clean sound. There are lots of ways to add edge, distortion, etc. but there is no way to add clean, if the amp doesn't have it to begin with. You probably realize that there are tons of distortion pedals out there but how many "clean" pedals do you see? Fender "chime" pedal? Fender "bright switch" pedal? I don't think so. In production amps, like Fender and Marshall, I think Fender wins the battle of the clean.

I play thru a modified Fender (1966 vintage) Deluxe Reverb with a JBL speaker. I have "clean" nailed to the max. I use a Tom Sholtz Rockman 100 rack mount for edge and distortion.

Here'sa Pic of it. Great Tone from 2 seperate 75 watt solid state amps. You can use a patch chord to jump from one amps "send" to the others "return" and get 150 watts, or if you plug into that center jack you can Mix the Clean and Dirty Channels together, hence the name "Crossmix 150".

marshall and fender just dont compare to each other unless you look at the first JTM marshalls against the bassman. Jim marshall copied the bassman for his first amps. Now though they are 2 very different amps. If you want any kind of authentic muscular gain sound then marshall are the only choice of the two given. Likewise marshall just do not sound as nice clean as the majority of fender amps.

How can we answer this when we don't know what your criteria is for "better"?

In the end the only thing that matters is what sounds better to you.

No doubt bout it, it's gotta be a personal feeling, You'll Know!

My Buckers, on my Tele FMT, kick thickly through a Marshall,

Single Coil Strats & Tele's Sing & Ring through a Fender Blues Amp,

but an Ibinez 50 W Amp hooked up to a 51 Strat can ring like a piano!

It's like Chemistry for the Ears!!
Wattage also effects on tone.

Personally, My Marshall comes first.

I like Marshall but Fender amps are nice. The clean channel on Fender is a lot better than the Marshall.

It depends what you want out of it really. If you want a bb king clean blues go with a fender for there beautiful cleans.
But. if you want that SRV-Clapton Dirt blues (overdriven) than definetly go with the marshall.
