ORANGE PARK, Fla. (AP) - A keyboardist for the southern rock bank Lynyrd Skynyrd has died at his northeast Florida home.

"Orange Park Police Lt. Mark Cornett says 56-year-old keyboard player Billy Powell called 911 about 12:55 a.m. Wednesday saying he was having trouble breathing. Rescue crews performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at 1:52 a.m.

Cornett says no foul play is suspected and an autopsy will not be performed.

He says Powell missed a Tuesday appointment with his doctor for a cardiac evaluation. A heart attack is suspected.

Powell was one of two surviving band members who were with the group before a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi that killed three of its members."

RIP

He was one of the best keyboard players in the business. I guess that only leaves Gary Rossington as the sole original member left who's still alive.

Isn't Ed King still alive? I think he was sort of a misfit in the band, but was, so far as I know, the main writer of the music of "Sweet Home Alabama" which got the band on the map. Also wrote "Incense and Peppermints" great top 40 psychedelia.

I read an interview in which Ed King said the entire song "Sweet Home Alabama" came to him in a dream, including complete fingerings for the solos.

I heard one of those "inside the band" radio segments that was pretty interesting. A band member was saying that Billy roadied for the band for a year and never told anybody he could play. His parent made him take piano lessons and he was ashamed of it. The band was always trying to put "Free Bird" together as a song, but never could get it right.

Anyway, Billy finally walked over to a piano and showed them how it should go. They were blown away...

R.I.P., pal.
