Anyone use flatwound strings? I've always liked the thought of them, but not the price! The only person I know that uses flatwounds is on a fretless bass.

Could I put flatwounds on my Strat? And would there be any point?!

Hello Red Paul.

'Have been using flatwounds for a few decades. 'Use flats (.011 D-R) on a couple different guitars, including a Strat and Jazzmaster and Fretless Jazz Bass (Fender Flatwound Bass strings).

Personally 'find them especially appealing for:
Church Bass
Jazz bass
Surf bass
Lounge bass
Jazz guitar
Lounge guitar
Surf guitar

Especially on the fretless Jazz Bass, they have a smooth, "horn" kind of sound.

Yeah, that's how George Benson gets those Smooth Triads without "Finger Zips".

Donald Duck Dunn uses them on His Bass, too.

They're expensive 'cause they don't make a lot of them. I'd say get a set and put 'em on, you might like 'em. But get a set of regular strings, too. Just in case you don't like 'em.

When I bought my strat, I had a set of D'Addario Chrome flatwounds (.11s) put on, as a lot of the surf guys play them. Love the sound, love the feel. I just started playing, but I feel and hear a difference from the .09 roundwounds that were on my first loaner. I think Bellew Music has some pretty good prices. Try them.

Hello Red Paul,

I use them on my Deluxe Strat
with it's Vintage noiseless pickups
sounds pretty nice to me.

I was using 12's but now I'm using 11's.

Cheers.
