I'm new to the forums here and am no professional at guitar, but I do have a pretty good idea of the instrument and am far ahead of most people my age.

Dont get me wrong, I have a great guitar teacher but he doesn't seem to have a vast knowledge of scales, he is more into acoustic and chords. He is also a great vocal coach, but we'll leave that off for now.

Anyways, i'm wondering how to do a pentatonic scale (major and minor)

many thanks,

Billy_Talent

Sounds like you have more of a rhythm guitar teacher.
Nothing wrong with that, unless you want to go lead and/or play solos.

Though frankly someone who doesn't know his scales should not be charging fees as a music teacher.

Not going to get very far with chords if you don't understand the notes they're made from.

New teacher needed, perhaps?

Cheers - C

The best teaching i had was really theory oriented. granted I had been playing for a decade before I took a lesson. my playing improved vastly by learning scale theory, and about modes, and stuff.

Here's a video on Justin Sandercoe's site showing the 5 positions of the Minor Pentatonic scale:

If you want to play blues, you might want to consider a boxed method that extrapolates parts of the 5 pentatonic positions to produce a fast way to learn leads. Here is a link to a video showing the 5 essential blues boxes:

don't worry, he can do plenty of lead guitar. Not to mention he's a superb vocal coach as well, and has a sick recording program with a drum machine.

He's taught me theory quite well actually, don't think that just cause he doesn't know his pentatonic scales he's no genius. Don't think that just because i'm a beginner i can't tell where talent is, i may not have the eye of an eagle at it but my teacher is very qualified.

I'm planning on when i'm older being a lead singer / guitarist, not to mention that my band WOULD do some jazz and stuff that would require me to play more lead lines. Doesn't matter, He makes learning fun and that goes for miles.

Believe me, i can understand what notes chords are made from and i wouldn't have if it weren't for my guitar teacher.

when i asked him about the pentatonic scales rather than just quitting on me learning scales he showed me how a major scale can be a minor starting from the 6th.

Whenever we learn a song he not only teaches me the guitar for it, he even gets me to do the singing as well.

So dont tell me i need a new teacher.

I dont even know where to start with this... Let me just say, I saw Billy Talent live (only because they were opening up for someone else I did want to see) Was not impressed.
