Years ago a group I played with worked alot at a club in Pulaski Tennessee called Holley's Place. The owner's name was, you guessed it, Buddy Holley.

He was rather amazing and certainly gave many players a reason to go out and get a Stratocaster.

'Wonder if he would have been as cool, hip, influential if he played Gibson or Gretsch back then?

Ah! 'Peggy Sue '. One of the very first records I ever heard. My older sister bought it, I think on 78 rpm ( not sure ) and as a kid I played imaginary drums along to it. While my sister and her friends ' jived '... 8)
Yes he helped start something, along with a few others.

Influential? Absolutely.

A "master of the stratocaster"? I don't think so at all. He played what he played, he just happened to do it on a strat, which gave him a different sound that some other guys of the day.

I'd consider Jeff Beck, Jimi, Ritchie Blackmore, SRV - all "masters of the stratocaster". Buddy Holly/Holley/Holey/Halle is more of a basic, but influential player. At least to me.
