Hi, everyone, I have another question. I'm getting better at my changes between open chords, but to get to the songs I really want to play (Ramones, The Hives, The Vines), the next frontier is to get good at changes that go from open to barre chords and back again (and I'm even spelling it correctly now, see?).

I was googling for tabs and found two different versions of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day, one using open chords and one using barre chords, so I thought it might be a good strategy to learn both versions, but when I asked my teacher, he said that since that song is supposed to have a really strummy accousticy sound, one really should play it like Billy Joe does, using open chord shapes and a capo on the first fret.

So now I need some more suggestions - do you know any easy songs that include a good mix of open and barre chords? Links to tabs most appreciated (unless that violates the terms of the boards in some way).

Try - House of the rising sun-The Animals! If you play it in A minor you can play it with all bar chords or a mixture of bar and open!

Sunshine of Your Love by Cream. Fun song to play, and if you can find the right tabs for it you can see that it does use barre chords.

Don't forget you can play your general C-F-G (G7) songs blending both.
Playing the open C and then F barre G (G7) barre and then back to open C.
A good simple way of switching from open to barre. Lots of easy songs to throw that into and good practice for moving from open to barre.
Hope that helps.
Cheers... :D

there the way to go for barre chords. Johnny Is the rock n roll god since the early 60's.
Everyone seems to have forgotten that a song made of primarily barre chords rarely utilizes open chords except for verses or middle 8's within the generes Ellen asked about. When such occurances happen theres usually enough room for someone of adequate practice to make the change.

Ellen. Just thrash them barres for a while and spend some time practicing changing between your open shapes aswell. They are quite easy to do when you get a feeling for the timing of such artists that you like. However rudimetary Johnny or whoever may be considered. Barre to open i find easier than open to open. Who wants open chords anyway. Their only for ballads.

Gabba Gabba Hey.

I learned my bars with Under The Bridge by the peppers. Really loveable and rewarding once you know it.

Ellen, try playing psychotherapy by the ramones. That song moves barre chords up and down the neck quite a bit. If you play it like johnny its all played with the 'E' shaped barre and all 6 strings. I play it using E and A shapes though.
No open chords in it.
Heres a half decent transcription with video help in tab reading.

Any Ramones for that matter. Simple guitar parts, but fun to play. Remember doesn't need to be intricate to be good. I would suggest learning the rhythm parts to some Black Sabbath numbers too.

Blues Traveler, Hook.

Or any Blues Traveler from their first 5 albums. Their Guitar Player isn't the best lead player, but he's a chord substitution master. He'll play the rythm open chord once thru, then barre, then end with crazy D shaped barre chords. Plus their slow stuff is fun open chord stuff with little rythm hooks that are really fun to play, Like "Sweet Pain".

Check, on Walk Don't Run - already learned it! Not with whammy bar, though, still have to finesse that.

These are awesome suggestions, everyone! Keep them coming!

With gratitude,

EllenW
