I am a bass player of 16 years, not bad for a 25 year old huh? I am a huge fan of Fenders, but they (Fender) make them so hard to own because of the price. I remember when you could get a Mexi P-bass brand new for about $299.00. I am a teacher that teaches high functioning autistic high school children. I make about $15,000 a year after taxes. I have only bought one Fender brand new. That bass was a 5-string Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass MIM for about $550. I have owned a few other Jazz Basses but I got them used from Guitar Center in Toledo for about $250.00. I really love Fenders but it is hard to afford them, even the Mexi's. I wish Fender could take the price down. I would sell my soul for an American!!!! How do you guys feel about this?

eh, some models seem a bit pricey, but most of them seem pretty well priced for the great instrument you're getting... i usually find the mexicans are great deals as opposed to epiphones or such which are around the same price range... they are definitely much better priced than gibsons

Save your nickels and bide your time. Shop smart, shop used.

I paid just a bit over $600 for my drop-dead wonderful American Precision Deluxe, and it creams basses costing many times more.

I got my American Jazz Bass, second hand, in mint, 17 years old for...£360 :D

That's roughly $720. I was lucky - you just have to be patient and have a good eye!

I do agree some of their basses are rather expensive but a lot of them are worth it.

Mike,
I can't talk to you bass problem; however, I just want to put in a good word for the ESE teaching that you are doing. This year, I'm teaching 6th grade World History with a few ESE students, mostly SLD and EH, but a couple of autistic kids. Last year, however, I taught History, Language Arts, and Wilson reading as part of an ESE Bridge team where most of the students were SLD and EH. Talk about a difficult job...they ran me ragged...and as we both know, we have an important job with lousy pay and extreme satisfaction knowing that we DO make a difference...keep it up and don't get discouraged. :D

Keep looking man! I found a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass on Ebay for about $400. It's a great bass and it's in damn near new shape. The deals are out there!

Tough times never last, tough people do

It will turn around for you, my brother. Meanwhile, watch that used market!

You should be able to score a used Mexi P or J in the 200 range if you watch ebay. Some of the used higher end mexi models and Hwy1's can go for around 4 bills. Just keep looking ...you'll find a good one for a good price.
