I have a songbook for my guitar, and some of the pages say things like:

Capo I (D)

Or,

Capo 2 (A)

I was wondering what exactly this meant. Any help would be appreciated!

A capo i a device that clamps down the strings at a certain fret.

Capo 1 should mean place the capo at the first fret.

Yeah a capo is a string-clammer, but I don't know why they say Capo 1 = D.... because there is no D at all in any of the open strings with the Capo on 1.
But maybe they mean Capo on 1, play a D. It's probably that, but I've never heard of switching from capo-position in a song.

The (D) might refer to the change inn key for the song, after using the capo.

Does this help??

http://guitarstringguide.com/drupal/con ... itar-capos

Presumably your book is saying that if you put your capo on the suggested position and play the chords as written, the actual key played will be the one in brackets....

Capos are great for beginners - lets you change key dead easy. ;)

That often means...

(1) D

- Put the capo on the first fret
- play a D chord (in relation to the capo)

In this case, it will actually be an Eb chord, but that starts to get confusing, so they just have the chord shapes or TAB in relation to the capo.

is there a glossary on your book, or a legend or something explaining notation?

I have a dunlop clamp on style capo, but I like the look of that G7. I may look into one.
