Absolutely my one of my top favorite guitar players. Listen to Live in Europe, Irish Tour, Stage Struck, both Taste albums, heck everything! His tone is both awesome and unique. I can't say enough praise about the guy. I got into his music about 9 years and it changed my life and greatly influenced my playing.

Also, check out the Irish Tour DVD as well as Live at Rockpalast and Live at Montreux--awesome visual evidence of his six string prowess!

Rory is my No 1 all time fav guitrist, followed closely by SRV and Jimi.

His performances were just so electric and full of raw energy. check out any of his live stuff on youtube. its amazing, considering the man was quite reserved when off stage.

I urge you all to read "riding shotgun" by Jerry McAvoy, Rory's bass player for 20 years.

Irish Tour and Live in Europe are both phenomenal albums, even better than his studio albums and thats saying something.

Clapton doesnt rate against any of the guitarists mentioned here, most of all Rory. I saw his actual Strat a few years ago in a guitar exhibition in Dublin, Ireland. Just to see it gives you goosebumps, to think of the songs written on that very guitar.

The man also learned to play Sax in a closet as his neighbours said it was too loud! What a legend!

Most people just sing about the blues from a high high pedistool in a large mansion with lots of cars, money, girls etc, but Rory lived the blues.

Just listen to Million Miles Away. Thats a song about real life, about his expiriences, the way he sees the world. and its absolutely awesome.

One of the last true bluesmen.

one more thing, Snowy72, Rory never ever ever took drugs other than the medicinal type prescribed by a doctor. His band mates were even afraid to light up a joint with him in the building, doing things like putting a jumper against the bottom of the door so Rory wouldnt smell the smoke.

Yes he drank, heavily towards the end, but he had staunch views on drugs.

Also check out BBC Sessions. Double CD of both live and session work done at various times for the BBC. Lots of tasty stuff..Including what I think is the finest version of "Calling Card"..

I first heard of Rory probably 4 years ago.. not much, but got really hooked after watching some of his videos performing with Taste in early 2006. One of my favorite players ever. I have both the Montreux double DVD and the Irish Tour and can't reccomend them enough.

10000000000% agree !! The solo in " A Million Miles Away " is simply incredible. To me, Rory is telling the world how alone he feels even though
he's a famous and successful musician....... I'm a million miles away, a million miles away, sailing like the driftwood, on a windy bay - then the solo sounds just like a piece of wood bobbing in the water and the way he manipulates his volume and tone controls is sheer genius.

ps - the next track after that ..... " Walk On Hot Coals" ........... !!!!!!!!!!!! :!:

Rory Gallagher was a very, very good guitarist. Right up there with Clapton, Stevie Ray, Robert Cray and the rest. Its way too bad he checked-out so early. Like losing Stevie Ray, his going home so early was a tremendous lose for us.

Definitely one of the greats, but very underrated. I'd say ranked in my top 5 at least.

I wouldn't say he was so underrated here in the UK. He may have been a bit forgotten, but I remember in the 70s he was a big name, and very hgihly regarded. In fact I had the pleasure of seeing him play (Southampton, England 19 ... erm 78 or 79 maybe).

He was the last of the independents!

I've never read a good explanation of the medical problems that lead to his death. His brother claims his liver problems were caused by "Tylenol" (or whatever the UK version is). But why was he taking so much of that pain medication? What pain did he have? Etc, etc.

He took some stress medication to calm himself down when flying. he became increasingly afraid of flying as his life went on, due to SRV and other greats dying in flying accidents. for a man that had to fly regularly this was not good at all

The stress had his stomach in knotts and he was in pain, so stress medication, pain killers and alchol caused massive liver damage.

He had a liver transplant, which succeeded, until he got an infection, some form of MSRA, and that finished him.
