Rory Gallagher? How do you feel about this man as a blues guitar player? Personally, when I came across his stuff about three months ago, I realized that I had missed out on an incredible and soulful blues player for most of my life. If you aren't aware of this guy, I urge you to check him out.

he is a must for any music fan. An all time great player. I put him ahead of Clapton on my list of faves. this is personal opinion, but i really feel that strongly about how good he is.

I definitely agree with that assessment, Twelvebar. When I heard the guy, he shot directly up to the top of my list.

I was fortunate enough to see Rory play live, an outstanding guitarist. It's all a bit hazy these days, but one of the gigs was held up for over two hours. Rory had somehow managed to cut his hand, it was a nasty one requiring hospital treatment, thus the long delay. It really should have been cancelled, but Rory insisted he was OK to play. What a night!!! He played until about 01:00am, no one left to catch trains etc. It was a long walk home that night, but worth every step. RG is right up there with the best, unfortunately his dark side got the better of him. Like so many great artist's, booze and drug abuse saw his demise :( For any of you that have never heard him, there are some great vids on youtube, check them out.

One of my all time favorite also. Unpretentious and giving, loved his fans. Had the good fortune to see him live 3 times.
Amazing - electric guitar, slide, mandolin, acoustic, harmonica. He would play for hours. And constantly grew his sound.
Saw him break five strings one show...

I've been a Rory Gallagher fan since the early 70's. I'm 47 now (meaning I was just a kid when I started listening). I remember seeing him on "In Concert" several times and I've been a huge fan ever since. I was really saddened to hear of his death, but as with SRV, his music will live on.

That's a dumb question to ask. Very underrated Blues guitarist who influenced a lot of players from that era.

Of course Rory was a great guitarist.

If you are unfamiliar with him, check him out on YouTube and then start buying some of his CDs and DVDs ...

Have heard of him but never actually heard him.

Any "essential listening" tracks you could recommend?

I would simply recommend picking up the "Irish Tour" CD, putting on a set of headphones, and going along for the ride....

Along with "Irish Tour' 74" , I can't recommend anything higher than Rory's second solo album "Deuce". The range and style of the guitar playing is PHENOMINAL........ especially for only being 23 at the time !!
He wrote, sang and produced all the tracks. There is some beautiful acoustic guitar work here - the first track - "I'm Not Awake Yet " has a great acoustic solo which would put most guitarists to shame. He plays some harmonica... a la Dylan style... and shows his knowledge of different picking styles. There is a favorite track of mine " Should've Learned My Lesson" that Muddy Waters could have played - it fits perfectly in that Chicago blues style. However... the 2 tracks that rate alongside ANYONES best is the #2 track - "Used to Be" which has a stinging, slashing Strat sound and some really cool bass lines. To me this is THE classic sound of a Stratocaster !! Along with that, the #10 track - "Crest of a Wave" is simply OUTSTANDING !!!!! If anyone reading this has not heard this from the album - then you are really missing something. The two slide guitar solos are mindblowing - easily ranking along Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Skynard's, ANYBODY's BEST work. An interesting note about how it was done - Rory recorded this AFTER playing concerts, so he & the band would be really charged up and ready to go.... it worked !!!
