I've often used low power amps to get the tone I like and then mic'd the cabinet. But the microphone choice and placement can make or break the sound. Anyone have advice--dos or don'ts?

My CAD Condenser Mic does a good job for a low price. I think the Best would be the Sennheiser E906, but once you get into Higher Quality Condenser Mics, it's really a personal preforance thing.

I use either a Shure SM-57 or a Senn E906. The Sennheiser e906 has a flat body shape and a hum-compensating coil that minimizes self noise, and 3 selectable characters (Bright, Normal, and Smooth).

Used to use the SM57 exclusively, in the EVH configuration. (For live it's the only sensible option, MHO.)

But since getting some nice large diaphragm ADK mics I've been using those and getting nice results. I mess around moving them from eight inches to two feet in front of the cone. I've tried using a room mic too, but that gives more space than I like. Likely my room isn't exactly ideal.

On average I'm probably gradually reducing my gain, which may have something to do with a shift to condenser mics too...

Cheers - C

A lot of folks are going to say the Shure SM-57 because it's the "industry standard" but now a days that's simply a load of bunk and there are MANY great mikes to choose from that can give you equal if not considerably better sound. I've often used my wife's Senn e835 with fantastic results but any more I don't even bother with a mic or an amp...personally I just go straight into the board.

Very simply, as with most things sound related, the "best" way is simply the way that works for you and gives you the sound that you are after. There are a great many things in relation to recording now a days with EQ being the most important (IMHO). Very simply if it don't "fit the mix" then it doesn't matter which mic/amp/guitar/etc., that you use. My advice would be to try as many mics as you can get your hands on in as many positions as you can to find the sound that -you- want. Don't be afraid to experiment as there is no right or wrong here...only what works best for you.

Just my opinion as always,
Jim

Another vote for the venerable SM-57.

Full Disclosure:
Like Jim, I almost always record direct. I don't bother with mics anymore.
