I own an automotive electrical specialty shop and there are places that we use gold contacts because of thier, supposedly, better condutivity of current. If you have a newer vehicle with air bags all of the connectors are gold plated. There are a few computer connections of some vhicles that are gold plated for this same reason. So, with that in mind, I'd think that gold would also be a better way to get clean electrical current from your instrument to the amplifier. Besides, gold connectors look so kool....

I suppose my question is exactly how big a difference in tone can an instrument cable make? I currently use Musicmover cables which I believe are housebrand of one of the big chain stores. The quality seems to be pretty good, the price reasonable, and they suit my purpose (home use) and budget well. I'd definitely be interested in cable upgrades if the difference is truly noticeable.

Considering that for most people the gold cable ends will be the only gold connectors it won't be big. I suppose it you rewired your guitar and amp with gold hardware it might matter.

No doubt that gold is a better conductor. But how much of a real difference does it make? I bet in this case it's negligible as it is such a small part of the overall guitar to amp equation ...
