Does it really make a difference if the jack on an electric guitar cord is gold plated?

Hello Rockn,

I really don't know if it's better but a few
years back I had one made for me and
the builder chose golden ends on the jacks.
It cost me close to $60 for a 8 foot cord, but
it serves me well and is the quietest cord I've
ever owned, of course I don't stand on it or
abuse it, always coiled never folded.

Cheers.

Gold is a better conductor of electricity, so theoretically it would be better. However, what it makes up for as a conductor, it lacks in durability. I don't know about the current gold plated cord offerings, but I recall hearing in the past how the gold plating on some cords would wear out or wear through after lots of usage. This may not be an issue any more, but I have been pleased with my current selection of Conquest and ProCo cables fo a few years now, so I haven't looked into them lately...

The fact of the matter is, it doesn't matter what the plug is plated with if its not a quality plug. Also if the cable is not of high quality, it doesn't matter what the plug is plated with either. I tend to look for cables that use either Switchcraft, Neutrik, or G&L plugs, and then some decent quality cable like Belden, which is why I tend to prefer Conquest cables. Quality components, affordable prices, great durabilty and performance (for me at least, your results may vary...).

Guitar Player magazine reviewed a bunch of cords in its May 2008 edition. First time I ever saw a guitar mag do a feature on cables. What I got out of it was that price was a poor indicator of the quality of the cord.

I spent the extra money for some Monster cables, but each one died out after a year or so. I mentioned that to one of the salesmen at my local GC and he told me he hears complaints about them all the time. Had a similar experience with the only Planet Waves cable I ever bought. I went back to Fenders.

I got an Evidence cable with my DG Strat, It's an amazing piece of kit. My regular cables are now these from Elixir, they're great.

When it's plugged in to your guitar and amp - how can you tell? :)

Hi rockn, I'd suggest that you take a look at "How to build a better instrument cable". This should give you hints about what to look for on a good quality cable. Good luck.

In my experience, Mogami Gold cables have lasted the longest and sounded the best for me and they're built durable to withstand those "accidents" that sometimes happen on a gig.

Yes, I knew about the warranty and I even saved the receipt but decided not to pursue it. I didn't want another one. I don't gig anymore so we're talking about light duty use at home. Very disappointed.
