Who knows if any of these people will read this--and I have thanked many of them in some way--but I just wanted to list people who have had some impact, influence, or effect on my guitar playing over the years. So here it goes.

1-The Unknown guitarist/musician--I don't know why I wanted to play guitar--I just always have--so whoever or whatever it was that gave me that desire at a very young age deserves credit/blame
2-My parents-they bought me my first real guitar (and my first toy guitar), they bought my first electric, bass & amps for each. They paid for many, many lessons, festivals, accessories, music, etc. And they supported me, even wen they didn't enjoy the music. My Mom has played tapes of songs I've recorded, when if it wasn't me and/or my brother on that tape--she wouldn't even listen to that song.
3-4 My first two piano teachers (I'm sorry, I forget one of your names) for getting me started and teaching me a lot of the theory.
5-9 Most of my guitar teachers-
Stevhan, who got me going.
Richard, who was patient while I learned to tune & tried to get me interested in classical guitar music (it did eventually sink in.)
Tim, who taught me power chords & band stuff and more.
Marcus, who was easy to relate to, listened and helped me learn to arrange songs quite differently.
and even Russell, who I understood better after I became a teacher. He helped put a lot of other stuff together.
10 Jim, a friend who helped fuel musical dreams.

That's part 1.

Post your lists if you want to--or ignore--just something I felt like getting out of my system.

Part 2-
11 A different Jim, who supplemented my lessons, and taught me a bunch of songs--and was fun to jam with--unless he went off on his own--which happened sometimes, so we'd distract him and remove the fuse from his amp. Still some fun times--I learned a lot. And I got to teach him some stuff too.
12-13 Daryl & Bruce--the best cover of Sultans of Swing--hey? It was fun, educational, and also helped me learn the value of fans over critics in a very real & tangible way.
14-Darwin--great drummer & he has the recording stuff for demos. I still do his drumming in my head for some songs.
15-Grant-the riff-meister--great to jam with-great sense of humour
16 Charlie--my favorite salesman. Wish I'd had the money to get you bigger commissions! also had some great advice over the years.
17-Steve--I miss our acoustic jams, lost of fun.
18-20 Shawn, Mark, Josh--some different styles there to strum along with--I always like playing with guitarists of different styles. They also didn't pick on my simple bass playing.
21-23-When I taught I learned a lot, both from preparing lessons & from the students themselves. Teaching is a great way to learn. So on my list I'll mention three students to represent them all-The natural musician who can play just about anything he touches & play it well; the slow starter who gets there through perseverance, time & practice; and the student who will never be great, but plays simply for the joy of it-and therefore I enjoyed listening to him play. In no particular order that would be Geoff, Jamil & Noel

Thanks to you all.

Zontar, your humility in thanking the people that matter and influenced your playing far more than any record/cd artist, is quite astounding and very refreshing. We all look at jimi H or duane A or eric C as our influences and forget the real people that helped us.

Jolly good show old chap

Im off to ring my mom now.

I'd like to thank my old friends Steve and Dave.
They shared what they had learned about guitar playing.
I'm glad they didn't charge me.

This is a very nice thread. It is very refreshing to see true influences thanked in addition to the big stars out there. This is what we need...Spread the LOVE.

1. Thanks dad for my first guitar and amp. W/O you I would not be playing right now.

2. Thanks Heather (wife), w/o you I would not be playing what I am playing today (my Fender) and inspiring me to play every day.

Thanks for the kind words.

There's nothing wrong with acknowledging the big names that influenced us, but we often forget the people in our own lives.

they sometimes are a bigger influence--and even if they didn't directly influence our playing, they affected us in other connected ways.

I hope I had some of the same influence on at least some of my students.

Zontar,

You have a gift, too many people fail or refuse to see the bigger picture in life. You not only see it, you acknowledge and honour it. This thread has made me think, so you've not only influenced your students, you've influenced this poster in a positive way. For that, I say thank you. As rkeisher has already said.... " Spread the love" 8)

I agree with all of the above. We should think more about the little things in life.

Very nice thread and warm words.

I send my warm thanx to:

Boris, who was first inspiration to buy my first guitar, amp etc and shows me some power chord and amp settings.

To my teachers at Rock & Pop Schule Kiel:

Herbie, my first guitar teacher, shows me the basics, songs from The Beatles.

Enzo, my second teacher, the jazzer, shows me finger breaking chords and some songs out of the real book

Shee-wa, my third and female teacher over 6 years I think, "we can so all kind of stiles but no death metal ", grrr..., help me to get some of the hard solos into my head and fingers.

The Bandtraining mates, learning, sweat, discussions, cool gigs on the Kieler Woche and R&P Festival.

My neighbors who makes no trouble when I practice 7 days a week my metal stuff in the evening in the past.

Cheers :D

I agree, this thread is Refreshing and a Jolly Good Show!

I'd like to thank
1. My Dad for having a guitar in the house my whole life.
2. My Mom for supporting a Les-than-Lucrative Childs Dream.
3. My Brother, for taking up the Bass.
4. Mike, the guy who showed me what a lead guitarist is doing.
5. Kevin, for Playing together when we were youths.
6. Mrs. Lane, My High School Band Teacher, who gave me a huge opportunity, and knew just how hard to push. Taught me Patience and Practice are %80 of music.
7. Mr. Alviani for showing me how important Harmony and Music Theory is, and for making me realize my Voice is an Instrument, and I should take care of it.
8. D, for breaking my heart. I wouldn't have had the Deep Blues if you didn't do what you did.
9. Honney, for fixing it.
10. Everyone who's ever Got Up And Danced, Pumped Their Fist, Line Danced, Banged Their Head, or Bought Another Drink while I was playing in your Smoky Watering Hole.

I Thank You All!

I have to agree with the consensus that this is a cool topic.
I'd have to say my brother, who is an excellent musician and is FEARLESS. And my current guitar teacher, who agreed to take me on and teach me to finally really play the guitar after banging around on the darn thing for twenty five years.
They both consistently inspire me to become a better and more confident player.
