Music should never be thought of as an "industry."

The music business as been affected since the introduction of the blank cassette and piracy as been a continuing malaise, that it seems we will have to live with a while longer. Will there ever be a complete answer ?

CD sales keep dropping year after year, but piracy is only part of the problem. The record and music industry itself is the larger issue when possibly only 5-10% of all the artists on the larger labels make profits, and then those profits end up funding the 90-95% of the acts that are signed, but can't even break even or to pay the bills for advances that never pay for themselves. Touring doesn't help either, as most of the money made from touring is from merchandise, thats why concert t-shirts have went up from $15-20 in the mid 80s to starting $30+ these days...Piracy is an issue, but when the industry itself would give or invest large sums of money on people but then cannot make up that money invested on most of the artists signed, piracy is not the main issue with the current state of much of the music industry.

I sure would think that piracy has affected sales, people are much more inclined to take for free what's out there rather than pay for it.

For me, the 'net in general has affected my buying. I hear a song on the radio or tv that I like, but before I buy anything I'll hit Youtube and see what else the artist has out there. If I don't hear anything else I like I don't buy it. In the old days you bought music on the strength of what you knew, now the unknowns affect the decision as well.

It's kind of sad. I used to love hitting the local Musicland or travelling to the nearest Peaches and browsing LP's for hours. That's part of the past that's lost I guess, music stores are so few and far between now.

Ofcourse it's affecting the Music industry. And probably in a negative way too.
But there are those creative musicians who can make use of things like that. For instance, lots of new Indie - Bands are putting their albums online. Then people (like me) will download them and then their will be more chance that those people will go to their concerts (like me).
After those concerts, people might even buy the CD (like me).
But the music business is still a hard one to crack I guess, and I think it'll always be.
