A Gibby LP standard is @ US$ 2,300ish...let's say 4.5 - 5x more money of the Epi

Besides the obvious differences there are some lesser seen differences such as: Electronics (pots, caps, wiring), Hardware (pot metal vs carbon steel). Additionally, American labor costs more than Chinese labor.

There are bigger differences than that. For Gibson vs Epi, it is not like the way we compare Fender MIMs to MIAs, where the gap is so close. An Epiphone Les Paul does not play and sound like a Gibson Les Paul Standard. The Epi LPs look great, but they are a lot farther away than just a tone-pot and tuning machine from the real deal. (this is no slam on Epi guitars, by the way)

I am sorry if someone thought I was saying they are a tone-pot away. I just know that an American made guitar will cost 4 - 5x as much as a Chinese import. Some of the differences are very blatant, some are very subtle.

Gibsons are way overpriced. Their Materials and Electronics are way better than the Low end Epiphones, but very much the same as the Elitist and Ultra model Epi's, which will put you back about 900-1200 dollars.

The Korean Epiphones are made by extremely capable craftsmen that really know wood and finishes.
In the last 8 or 9 years the American Gibby's quality has slipped. I've seen Fret Glue, Neck Joint Glue, exposed under coat, and drips and Smudges in the Finish on all kinds of Gibby's in the $2500 range, Acoustic and Electric alike.

Guitars made in America are more expensive because of the Overhead a company has in America. It's up to that company to make sure that the Product they're selling is worth the price they have to charge. Fender, Schecter, Eastwood, and several other American Makers do a great job of making the Made in USA tag mean Assured Quality. Gibson, Washburn, and a few others seem willing to stand on Name Recognition and Consumer Patriotism while cutting corners in Quality Assurance. This practice seems a Bit Shady and maybe even a little Unpatriotic.

This has been a Gibson issue for more than just 8 or 9 years.

I am not even cutting on gibson quality so much, because I have only owned one GIBSON a 1964 MELODY MAKER. It was ugly looking, but played great. I owned 2 EPIPHONE "TED NUGENT" as I like to call those big hollow bodies and I traded all of these for FENDERS some after only owning them for a few days.

My main gripe is the unrealistic price.

Having already said that gibby's are great guitars, and that they're still not my first choice, I'll also say...

- I too think they are WAY overpriced for what you get
- They are overrated as well
- Most owners swap the pickups anyway, and I can get a very Les Paul like humbucker tone out of any of my humbucker guitars

If I were going to spend a good amount of money on one electric guitar, I'd buy a custom 24 10-top PRS way before a les paul. Nice looking, more versatile, better tone (in my opinion) and I like the feel of a PRS far better than a les paul.

I can afford any PRS, any Les Paul or any Strat. I still choose a Strat - without any second thought whatsoever.

Although I am definately a Fender player, I tried a Gibson LP (can't remember which model) that was priced at $2500.00. I tried out the similar looking Epiphone model priced at $600.00 and it was like night and day. the Gibson played so much better than the Epi, but those necks still don't feel right in my hands.
