I just got my brand new 72 Telecaster Deluxe, in a gorgeous black. The finis is absolutely flawless, it just looks stunning, except for one thing: that protective plastic covering the pickguard!

I've got most of it off, but there's still annoying little bits around the screws holding the humbuckers in, there are scraps around the selector switch, and most annoyingly of all, there's loads under each of the four knobs, making them scratchy and hard to turn.

So... what tips and tricks do you all have for removing this plastic without a full-scale dismantle of my new baby?

hehe, I remember having to do the same thing. I think I picked at mine for about week with no results. I finally got pi$$ed and ended up taking the guitar apart to get rid of that crap.

With the help of a monkey wrench and tweezers I've managed to remove all the plastic aside from the stuff stuck under the knobs, which are screwed tightly in place. However hard I try, the little screws holding them on will not budge. Any ideas for removing those?

Keep working at it for a while if you don't want to take it apart. I don't think there's any quick and easy way to get the plastic off.

Well it's all off... except for the scratchy plastic under the knobs. I need He-Man to loosen the screws holding them in place

I don't think there would be screws holding the knobs in place. Its probably just that they are on there really tight. You might try wrapping some string around the bottom under the knobs. Just tug on that a little bit and that might work.

No, seriously. They're screwed on. Unless this screw is just for decoration ;)

That screw is holding the knob in place. Some of those screws can be a little hard to break loose.

Who knew taking the plastic off of a new guitar could be so complicated. I say bring it to a local tech, have him remove the plastic and re-set the whole damn guitar. Or you can get a screw driver and loosen the screws your self and pull the plastic out 1-2-3. It's not that hard. I know some people will say that your are changing the height of the pickups which may affect the sound. Your only loosening up the screw by one or 1.50 turns. If you're careful and pay attention to the details you will be ok. This is not Mount Everest.
