not uncommon at the start. Big first step is to jam with, and practice with some friends. recruit them to help you play your stuff. sharing ideas while playing together comes naturally.

then you just have to realize that you had to share you ideas with your friends for them to play, and that the genie is out of the bottle, so to speak, and that you HAVE played your stuff for other people, so its not a big deal to play for others.
its not quite this simple, but its not far off.

Everyone goes through this, at some level. I know I was, and I'm still that way(a little) Its normal, but If you never try it, you will never know!
I played in front of my wife at first, she liked it! (just not as loud as me)
Then, a few friends came over and wanted to hear me play, so I did and they liked it too. I just kinda get into my own little world in my head, where it's just me and the guitar. How do you get over it? At what level are you playing? Do you practice on a regular? Do you feel good about what you are playing? Do the people you want to play for also play guitar?
The fact is you are going to make mistakes(everyone does)
Just use your mistakes to learn from. Above all HAVE FUN!
I'm sure this will be a flaming box soon, I hope I helped in some way.
good post

What i said is how it happened for me. it is different for different folks though. but I started sharing ideas at first, then one day i was just in a zone, and said to my buddies, "check this out!!"

You'd be surprised at how well your friends will receive your stuff. looking back it wasn't that strong, but it had a great germ of an idea. That little song is still around, its changed over time, and been retooled, but is at its core still the same idea, and its been 20 years or so. its funny, cus that group of friends, well, we've all grown up, and are scattered across a few different cities, but a couple years ago all 4 of us that used to jam ended up in the same place at the same time and that was the song they all wanted to play first. it was the first original tune any of us had completed, and it was great to see that it meant something to them too, even after all this time. oddly i was the one who made the most mistakes, they all remembered it better than I did.

Personally I'm always more worried about my lyrics then my music. So to get over being afraid to show people my lyrics I printed out a few copies and gave them to my friends and family to read, even if it's terrible. The more you do that, the less you feel awkward about it. And I've found that I tend to be allot harder on myself then I should be. Just do your best and have fun, that's what it's all about. :D

When people get up and start to dance you can`t be doing too bad. Thats when I knew people were enjoying the music.

About 15 years ago i was in a band with a very critical singer. 98% of the material was written by him and i can honestly say i've never heard anyone with a ear for melody and a good turnaround like him. Driving verses, chanty chorus's and middle 8s like a tyson uppercut. He was an astounding song composer. He would always slight other bands and blatantly laugh at them when we met them. He hit a point of minor stagnation (3 new songs a month instead of 10, that band still has recordings i'm on waiting to be released) and asked the rest of the band for assistance. I had a few things running around but was petrified to present them to him, as my song writing skills are a galaxy away from his. When i finally did pluck up the courage i was surprised at the reception i got. The country song was well received, the motorhead style song he asked for was rejected and the ballad was received too. Aside some minor adjustments and lyric re-writes their pretty much what i came up with. When i gave him the home recordings i'd pretty much prepared myself for a fall and thought well if he dont want em any input will be greatly received. So i was open to criticism, as anyone looking to perform on any kind of level must be. The adjustments he did make improved the songs no end. Now i'm open to suggestion from anyone about any of my songs, if you dont try it you'll never know. Im still no lennon or dylan. I'm just a bloke who makes a noise on this bit of wood.

Half of our show, when play in a club are my songs. When open or play at festivals, we play only my songs.

Songwriting is a craft, and you have to work at it. It's a great feeling to a song you wrote and have people dance/clap or sing along to a 'hook' that you wrote in a song :D .

We're recording our second CD 'The Cold Backhand of Love', it will be all original songs, that I wrote.
