Hi DBluesN: Joe's pretty much top of my list, these days. Kickin'est live show out there, juciest tone, a flock of superb CDs - and a pretty nice seeming fella to boot.

Frustratingly, he doesn't seem to be playing his Strats and Teles much just at present. I suspect the phrases "Gibson endorsement deal" and "signature model" have something to do with that...

But I'd go to see Bonamassa play a six-string saucepan: anything more's a bonus.

Cheers - C

I read an interview with him where he said that he stopped playing Strats to avoid being called an SRV clone.

Yeah, I read something similar. But it was in the same interview (Guitarist, early 2008) that mention was first made of that Goldtop LP on the horizon. Hopefully that was the real reason.

I've seen him in a magazine DVD doing nice demonstrations of various players' styles, particularly BB, EJ and SRV. But listening to his own playing it wouldn't particularly occur to me that he was a Stevie soundalike. I don't think he needs to worry about that.

Mind you, that gold flake Strat of his ain't my favorite on the planet. I've seen him play a sunburst which was much nicer...

Cheers - C

I have made no secret on this forum of the fact that I like Smokin' Joe Bonamassa quite a bit. Got to see him three or four months ago here in Nashville - absolutely magnificent show!

and having Larry Carlton pop in as a guest artist did not hurt things a bit either.....

Quite simply, a great modern blues guitarist. What else did you think we'd say? :)

One of the greats, this guy has a serious tone too, Love his playing!

He's quite the gear head LOL...he has like endorsements by every company under the sun. He is seriously a monster on the 6-stringer though...great chops.

First time I stood in front of that complicated rig of his (which seems to be constantly changing) I thought; "C'mon, be sensible. This is overkill."

Then he started playing and I heard that tone in the raw from eight feet away. Oh mammy...!

His new CD is pretty darn good too. I miss is old daily Sirius radio show, "Daily Cup 'O Joe". He played DJ and played some really good music.

I surfed You Tube to sample his style and his gear. Has a great deal of representative guitars. Seems to prefer Marshalls from the little the camera showed. I find Orville's observation regarding SRV cloning interesting. I would put him smack in the Gary Moore tone closet. Les Paul and all but he does some stuff that's very Eric Johnson as well. He's good enough at what he does to give the nod to the best, in style.

I don't care for my blues augmented with Paganini's Caprices played at 110 db,but that's a preference as to where sound touches me. As a virtuoso artist I can't disagree with anyone who speaks of him in superlatives.

Bonamassa does an excellent Led Zeppelin cover of "Tea for One" you've GOT to check it out! It's better than the original.

No - though he does like Jimmy Page, doesn't he? Glancing at his website I see he's playing the Royal Albert Hall in London in May: quick, tickets! I'll let you know if there's a theremin in that show...

With Jason Bonham on drums on the CD...

Doc, it is an unusual rig. Appears to change in detail continually, but the overall structure seems constant. Two 4x12 cabs with four 100w amps, each feeding a pair of speakers arranged vertically. Last time I saw it (early 2008) the amps were: a Marshall Jubilee 25/50; a Category 5 (a Marshall Super Lead copy); a Two Rock Custom Reverb Sig; and a Van Weelden (the last two both Dumble/Fender style amps).

The Marshall is the core of the sound and is always on: the other three are selected between with an A/B/C foot switch and are blended in to taste.

I've also looked at fairly huge pedalboards which seem to change so fast it isn't worth listing the units.

A strange detail is that the speaker cabs are placed behind a plexiglass baffle, which looks a bit odd but seems to contribute to some of the best sound balance I've heard close to a stage. And at very manageable volume levels, too.

All in all, a ridiculously baroque seeming setup - untill you hear it in action. Then you decide, "oh well, whatever it takes," with a happy sigh...

Cheers - C
