The Monkees inspired me to want to play guitar. If it hadn't been for them, I doubt I would have started as young as I did. The first song I ever learned was "I Wanna Be Free". I even had a song book of their first album. When my parents got me my first guitar, (some $20 special acoustic I'm sure), it came with a couple weeks of free lessons at the local music store. My instructor and I would play all those tunes from that Monkees book, "Last Train to Clarksville", "I'm Not Your Steppin Stone", "The Monkees Theme", et al. Ahh the memories. :)

No problem. Sounds like your father started you off right. Welcome to the forum! :)

I had some friends in high school that were in the marching and jazz bands, they also had rock bands outside of high school so I largely learned how to play just so I could jam with them. Then right about when I was 17 I saw Robin Trower and my Dad bought me an '80 Strat. :) I gave it up for years to do the career/family thing then took it up again about 3 years ago, absolutely love playing these days. If I have any regrets in life it's that I didn't play for all those years.

It was after a Thin Lizzy gig I got the geetar bug, I only dabbled for a few months. Ended up singing in a band or three, ah the memories. 30 years down the line, I'm picking up where I left off. And still listening to Thin Lizzy 8)

Let me see... I was about 8 years old, listening to a oldies station with my pops when "Day Tripper" comes on the air. Man, that opening riff was about the coolest thing I had ever heard. So I look over and tell my pops, I want a guitar! I want to learn how to play that!

So a week later what does he do? He brings me home a violin. Which I then played for 13 years. I guess it worked out in the end tho. I finally got that guitar... 24 years later. Any guesses what the first song I learned was? 8)

My Dad. He was always playing - Chet Atkins type music and Western Swing. That was about 40 years ago and he is still touring to play festivals.

I've always wanted to play guitar, I don't know who I saw on TV first and made the difference, but everytime I saw someone playing a guitar it got me!

Green Day and my dad got the ball rolling. I was around 10, now I'm 23 and still playing, and with a new promising band. Punk, the Beatles, and Django solidified it.

There was a guy who lived next door. I could here him through the walls of our duplex in a small town in PA. He was a great player. He played Van Halen, Thin Lizzy, Alice Cooper among others with the records. He would play out on the front porch on nice days and I would just listen as long as he kept playing. He was very gracious for letting me stare at him. Eventually I got out my mom's old steel string (which I still have) and started to learn. And I'm still learning. I wonder what ever happened to him. Great memories.
