Step 1. Cello lessons as a kid.
2. Huge music fan in college, developed regrets over learning cello rather than guitar.
3. Somewhere along the way some boyfriend or other taught me the chords to Louie Louie, but then took the guitar back because he wanted to show off
4. Forward a few years - midlife crisis
5. Colleague at work played a blistering solo at a work function, I wrote him an email the next day expressing amazement and saying it was my childhood dream to play like that, he wrote back and said, "You CAN. All you have to do is practice."
6. Cousin's husband has a job working at Fender (hi, A.B.!)
7. After moving to a new town, a friend sends me a scavenger hunt of things I'm supposed to do, one of which is "Play the first chord of Hard Day's Night on a 12-string"
8. As part of research for accomplishing that task, I wander into a guitar store and learn that it's not necessary to start on an acoustic playing classical and work up, in fact some even recommend starting on an electric. The salesman lets me try all sorts of different models - Squier, PRS - but the Stratocaster felt the best of all of them.
9. Put a call into Cousin A.B. asking, you know, if maybe there's one available?
10. Cousin brings Strat to me on a work trip, inspirational work colleague recommends a teacher, I give him a call, and the rest is history.

A contest between me and my friend Erick to see who could learn first and we winded up making a band.
Took me a couple weeks and my inspiration to learn fast was from Classic Rock cd's.

my mom and dad thought i should learn to play guitar and asked a cousin (a country/western singer guitar player stage name 'Thad Erican') and he recommended his guitar teacher then got a guitar for me (Silvertone acoustic they were popular back then) that was'56 and the rest is as they say history.

it was not really a band or artist, but ac/dc, kiss and prince was some faves from me in the past. the engergy and entertainment from them was/is fazinating.
in my youth i haven't ask my parants for getting a guitar cause my try to get a leather jacked wasn't successful. so i thougt that you don't need to ask...

later as i worked and earn my own money was the release a long haired, in a local metal band playing temporary worker. with him i entered the local music store and bought my first guitar a Ibanez JS100, amp, cable and so one for starting. There i was 27 in Nov. 95.

Cheers

Hey Fenderheads-

I am a Child of the early 70's and my much older brother would blast Lynard Skynyrd, Eagles, Foghat, Molly Hatchet- I liked the way that guitar sounded....As I got older I discovered Jimi Hendrix and that blew me away-and I played Air guitar in my room.

About 1985 I heard SRV for the first time and that was it...I heard the calling...I had to play. Thus began my guitar education that goes on till this day- Now I'm teaching my kids guitar and play in a band my best friend and I started. Great Fun!

well i grew up around music, my dad ,uncles and grandfather all played. like the song says there music and mine was not the same, but thats how i grew to love musis. i eaven like the stuff they were into now. but my taste leans more to blues and hard rock, anything with smoking guitar and deap gutsy bass lines.

Me too. February 9, 1964 sometime after 7:00p EST with some reinforcement the next day. The girls at school were so crazy for the Beatles on Monday morning that I had to find a way to get a guitar.

My uncle played an acoustic and tuned my first guitar and showed me my first chords.

I was in several bands as a drummer........and the guitar players in the bands showed me a few simple things on the guitar and got me started. I also took piano lessons while growing up.....so I've always had some type of music going on for me.

About five years ago......I friend of mine got me back into playing some guitar, and talked me into buying an electric guitar (I was playing acoustical before). We're now forming a blues band.

I took piano lessons for years, but my teacher wasn't very productive, so I quit that. Figured that was the end of music for me. But around August, I had got this itch for music again. It basically came from this guy I met. He introduced me to a bunch of bands I'd never heard of or listened to. I started getting into bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, and some metal in Iron Maiden.

So between him and that music, I started to pick up guitar in September. Only issue is my practicing is... limited, because I don't have much of a guitar to play on. :(

I would say EVH. I saw him play eruption and I thought I could be just like him by playing the guitar! I also was influenced by my mom because she had a very old acoustic guitar and I played and then just went on from there.
