My two oldest sons are just starting to learn. Does anyone else here try to do the teaching themselves? Any good tips?

Years ago, my son took lessons at school. Once he graduated he rarely touched his '93 Chrome Red Strat again. So now Dad has it.

My daughter is starting to learn, she's 16. My Son started to learn 2 years ago, but has decided it wasn't for him, he's 17 now.

Bought my son a Telecaster back in 99 and he's been playing ever since. He really wants my 1965 Bassman amp but he'll have to pry it from my cold dead fingers! 8) Mike

My dad does, but he didn't teach me a single chord!
had to find it all out for myself!

One tip I can give you is that you should really make sure that they are not afraid to make mistakes. Kids tend to look up to their fathers (till puberty comes in), so they'll probably be afraid of that.

that's the only and best tip I can come up with.

haha, that's so sad! But I can't help picturing an englishman on one knee with a guitar in his hands and disappointment on his face. Kids looking down on him, refusing his offer....

Anyway, Hang in there man!

My daughter (16) is a drummer in Worship, School Jazz band and she is also a band with friends.

She started noodling on the guitar @ year ago. She has picked it up pretty quickly.

I laerned to play guitar on my own. You know, if you wanted to learn, if the wish it's big enough they'll find a way.

I started my son with a Squire Strat. He's now a Tele-man, plays through a Twin Reverb and a Rock Pro.
Check him and his band out at The Spark/worship on My Space.

I've started my 2.5 yo daughter on ukelele, as much as is possible with a blatantly defiant, anti-authoritarian tyke. Punk music, here she comes. Every once in a while she finds my guitar and makes it a little more road worn.

My 11 year old son asked for a guitar for Christmas so we got him a Squire Fat Strat at Guitar Center's after Thanksgiving sale. My urge to learn to play was stimulated by that Strat so my wife gave me my first guitar - a Tele - for Christmas. Now my son and I are learning together. Or, rather, I'm trying to keep up with him!

This is a little backwards, I'm the kid and my dad plays too - and he's the one that got me started with my gear as a Christmas present.

I received an Essex PB-J Bass (32" scale in Purple) and an Ibanez SWX20 20w amp to start with.

Some of you may know my dad - he posts under the name giljanus

And we are saving up to get a Fender B-DEC 30 amp - all the better to practice and learn with. He spoils me rotten and I love it. I might get a matching Purple Strat type Guitar from Essex to go with my Bass before the B-DEC.
