With the current economy the way it is, how do you think this will effect sales of new guitars and amps, and how will the used guitar market be effected also.

Thanks
MrT

Hello MrT,

Well from a personel standpoint,
with my job in a constant state of flux,
in all fairness to myself and family I'm gonna
have to abstain from any big dollar purchases, and
I may just trim down a guitar or two to keep thing in check.

Cheers.

I bought one new guitar (Ash Tele) and one used on EBay but unlike in the past, that will be accompanied by selling three I don't use much. Before now, I'd have probably just kept them unless it got to where I hadn't played one at all for a long time.

Generally speaking, spending on entertainment related activities was down in 2008. That's unusual because almost always in the past, people spend more on entertainment when the economy is bad. Local things like movies and bands can benefit, particularly if people cancel things like high ticket vacation trips. But not last year ...

Some people I know decided not to cancel vacation plans despite (then) high gas prices. So later in the year, even though gas had dropped, they had little left for other spending. One good friend said that his family's vacation ended up costing more than 30% more than they'd estimated when they'd put the plan together back in 2007. So end result, all their "for entertainment" funds were gone in one shot in May.

I would expect overall spending to remain down in 2009. Even if the economy does seem to pick up, I think most people will remain cautious at least into 2010.

Not everyone is hurting, there`s plenty of collectors out there ready to buy a vintage instrument. I`ve seen Strats on Ebay and criagslist this past week for $30 000 to $50 000. So some people feel that there`s a market for them or they wouldn`t be asking for that kind of money.

There are certainly people with money out there. My brother did home remodeling for years -- mostly upper middle class and middle class people with a few blue collar thrown in. But over the past five years, he told me, the remodeling business has collapsed. A lot of his traditional middle class customers and even quite a few of the upper mids either don't have money at all or are not going to spend on something like a remodel unless they absolutely have to for safety reasons.

So instead, he's found a new market -- custom built houses for high earners and very secure retirees. He says there are people out there who have the money to pay him to build a house from scratch with nothing pre-fab, etc. But ... not much in between he's finding. Increasingly, he finds (in his area) that people either have obscene amounts of money or very little.
