My opinion is simply this; people who say "they don't have time", simply don't want to play. They just don't have the burning desire if you will. You can "if", "and" or "but" all you want but all you're doing is trying to rationalize a reason to give it up. A person who -loves- playing will find the time regardless of the other events in his/her life.

I'm 43 and my father -STILL- asks me when "I'm going to get a hair cut and get a real job". I tell him that I have a real job...I'm an artist and the haircut is simply part of my "professional image" :D.

Just my $.02,
Jim

Beautiful! I'm a professional writer, I'm self employed, and my mother in law still thinks that I'm "Less of a man" because I don't get up every morning, put on a suit and tie, and go to an office. It doesn't matter that I'm making a living for my family.

I think you've really hit the nail on the head here. I had a friend many years ago that when he got married, got a "respectable" job because his lady's parents "wouldn't allow their daughter to marry a guy who was a waiter and a musician". Ultimately this guy ended up working 14-16 hour days as a job he -hated- because he ended up hating his family even more. He's spent his entire life doing what -other- people believed he should be doing. Does he make more money that I do as a photographer/musician/artist? Almost certainly (although I wouldn't know for sure as I haven't spoken to him in a number of years now). In my book however, "success" isn't measured in fiscal terms as much as simply being happy...and in that regards, I'm one of the most successful people in the world :D.

I had tried doing the college route...went to school for computer repair and networking and such. At the time it was of course "the thing to do" because computers were the up coming thing. Unfortunately every other guy and his brother did the same thing and I ended up in a "career" where I couldn't even make minimum wage because the field was so flooded with computer techs. My last tech job I was put on salary...a whopping $14,500 a year...and yes, I had to wear a freakin' tie! Now I own my own business, I make my own hours and the -only- time I wear a tie is to a wedding or a funeral.

Of course I should probably also mention that part of my success is simply due to my lovely and wonderful wife...who also happens to be a very talented musician herself. I'm lucky enough to be able to say that my wife actually "understands me", LOL!!! Very simply, life is too short and too precious to do what other people want or expect of you. If you can't be happy and/or do something that you enjoy doing, then the rest simply doesn't matter. I'm not going to be one of those people who looks back at my life wonderfing "What if?"...even if I'm never famous or rich by conventional mentality, at least I've given it my best shot doing the things that I love to do and when my time comes, I'll have very few regrets.

As far as the mother-in-law thing goes...my wife and I simply haven't spoken to the woman in over 12 years. We're all much happier that way.

Peace,
Jim

youve pointed this out to me now im questioning if i still do have that burning desire and the answer to that is simple

YES YES YES absolutely! but i have to have a life and a job and though i dont like the idea of taking on the task i still want to, no i take that back NEED to, and i have to even if that means i wont have time for those things i WANT.
