I agree with all of the above. Wherever you go take your guitar with ya.
I wasted a lot of time when I was young, not playing because I didn't think I had the time but I did. The young brain has the capacity to take on board a lot of learning and that includes guitar.
Like some of us here, don't regret later what you could do now.
There is a saying " Youth is wasted on the young " grasp your time now and don't let it be wasted on you.......don't let it be wasted on you.
All the best kid. :D

When it was time for me to head to college, I sold my '71 Fender Mustang and every other guitar-related item I owned for book and tuition money. It also began the longest stretch of my life without a guitar. I regret it to this day. I think that's one of the big reasons I own 13 today. I'll never be without a guitar again.

You could even post a note on the college bulletin board and try to find others in the dorms who also play instruments or even just the guitar. This will give you a way to make some new friends you already have something in common with. You never know.... you and some friends could end up being the next "big thing" in the music world one day.

You know, if it is a TRUE LOVE you'll find time to play that thing.

Yeah take one with you. I let my playing slide for a while, and i regret it to this day.

One thing i will add, i find one of the best stress relievers ever is to sit and play my strat. I sometimes wonder how I coped with anything without that release for a while.

it may not be your main focus all the time, but playing is a natural part of life, and even if its only a half hour a day , here and there, keep it up, you'll be better for it.

If it means enough to you, you will make time for it. When I was in the Navy, going to sea and struggling thru nuclear quals, I still made time to play. Not a lot of time, mind you ... but I still always played here and there whenever I could ...

What is UTI?

College is probably the best time in your life to run into other musicians. Don't worry, you will still have time to play. Keep at it.

'Went back to finish undergrad at 41 and continued on total of 4 years and did master's too. Worked 50-hour weeks the whole time. Corporate tuition reimbursement was 100% for an A grade, 50% for a B, boo-boo for a C. Guess what this picker's GPA was?

Three daughters between 3 and 11.

Life was very busy.

But one thing which helped to maintain sanity was scheduling in the planner, 5 minutes per day of guitar. Sometimes it was only those 5. Sometimes it was 10 or occasionally 15.

Best of fortune. Do your BEST.

I played more guitar in school than at any other time in my life, granted I was in the music program.

It was fun out partying, and making other people stay up late too.
11:30 PM:

Them: "I have a lab at 8:00"

Me: "yeah i have class too, but we should stay out and party"

Them: OK, if you are too."

1:30 AM after last call:

Them : " man my physics lab is going to be so hard, what class do you have?"

Me : " I have an hour of comping chords in Performanc Big Band"

Them :

Playing is a good antidote for stress (school and job) and also an excellent way to untrack your brain when you're stuck with a problem. For instance, sometimes in an audit I simply cannot find a problem and the fact is, the more you dig in, the more frustrated you get. So I've learned ... shove the problem to the back of the brain, pour a glass of wine and play some tunes or maybe just play.

I too put my guitar aside (for 30 years or so) because of jobs, life responsibilities, etc. Big mistake to say the least. I don't kick myself for not still being the guitarist I once was; I'd have never had that many hours a day to practice anyway once in corporate life. But I do for the many times when I did something pointless or perhaps even not in my best interests when I could have just picked up a guitar instead.

The transition from high school to your first semester of college seems to be the time when you'll end up getting the worse grades. Make sure you get settled in and feel comfortable with your schoolwork before you make time for you hobbies. Once your comfortable you'll find you can always make time for something like playing the guitar. 10-15 minutes every now and then would be a great stress reliever from the school work. Also, take your guitar to school, you will probably have time between classes to pull it out and play.

Guitar.

Seriously don't put it down. In five months you won't see it as a big problem like today. Don't go to the dark side. 8)

Claude.

Well said!
I put my guitar down for "just a litte while, so I could earn a living." Many years later, I picked it up and regretted all the lost time. Guitar is more than a passion. It can make a bad day better. It can make a mediocre day great. And when you really know how to play, there is no better gratification.
Make time, have no regrets. If you really look at the time you waste in a day, even with all the responsibilities you have, you'll be surprised at the time you can find to play.
