Try to find a shop that offers Richard Rider & Sons strings, especially when you are looking for pure solid nickel strings. Not the cheapest, but good ones.

I've tried D"Addarios on several occasions and was not impressed. They are cheaper than most other brands (around here anyways) but like most things in life, you get what you pay for. I find they have less tone initially and sound dead faster. As well, the colour coded balls look goofy and unprofessional. I usually buy Fender Original 150's (10-46) but I occasionally experiment with other brands. Gibson Vintage Reissue have proven to be alright but more money than the Fenders. Although I use Gore Elixers on my acoustics pretty much exclusively, except in studio where I use Martin XPs, I was disappointed with Elixer electric strings.

GHS boomers are great, or Fender super bullets (i think that's what they're called)

For electric I use GHS Boomers, Fender Super Bullets or D'Addarios.
I don't like coated strings. They feel "wrong".

Avoid storebrand/generic strings--they go dead quite quickly--and the ball ends are not done well, so they are difficult to keep in tune.

I went from Fenders to Slinkys, tried D'Addarios, then back to Fender Super Bullets - 9s and 10s.

I have used Ernie Ball and D'addarios, and D'aquisto. Try www.webstrings.com, the strings are a good price and they last about as long as any I've tried. BTW, like antifreeze and motor oil, there are only a few string makers and they package strings for a lot of brands.

That's misleading. I agree there are fewer manufacturers than there are labels but there are far more makers out there than a statement like that can lead one to believe. And those manufacturers make lots of different kinds of strings to greatly varying specs. There are definate differences.

I think if you read my post again, you'll see that's pretty much what I said Like motor oil and antifreeze there are only a few manufacturers of strings. Like motor oil and antifreeze, different brands ask for slightly different formulas. Still, in over 40 years of playing, the main differences I have found in strings are in the packaging and marketing. It doesn't matter what brand I buy, they pretty much last the same amount of time and play the same if the gauge is the same. There may be slight differences, but nothing I can't adjust for. And my statement about the manufacturers also is backed up by internet research and by a friend who has been selling stringed instruments ( and strings) for over thirty years. Play the strings you like, but realize that like everything else you buy, your choices are largely influenced by the strength of a given companies marketing budget. YMMV.

By my opinion I think you should buy DR handwined strigs. They're great and they don't brake really often.\\
