Is there a classifieds section on this forum? I am looking for my first fender and would rather pick one up that someone else has already given some love to. sorry if this is a common thread...i did not see anything in the rules or faq.

I have been leary on ebay because I don't know enough about the brand to spot a fake or know what is a good value and what is not. I have been trolling CL for a while now.

Well, if anyone is trying to get rid of a basic strat, feel free to pm me. I am looking for a mexican model most likely bc I dont want to break the bank.

There are usually quite a few MIM Strats in the LA Craigslist, anywhere from "mint never used" to a few dings and dents.

In terms of EBay, sellers who know about guitars will generally show various pics including the headstock. You can also ask questions, so one legit one (if you can't see it in any pictures) is to ask for the serial number. You can then look that up on the Fender site to see if it agrees with the year the seller claims. If you have time, you can also look up body, logo, and other design features for the claimed year to veriify the picture.

This isn't perfect (but then you could be fooled by a looked at in person high grade fake found through Craigslist too), but so far, I've purchased 5 guitars on EBay with no negative experiences.

You'd do better to source a 2nd hand strat at a local shop these days. People are selling cheap through the economy.

Also i think the fender forums must be the worst place to look for a used strat. We all think ours were made in the custom shop and just got shipped out of the corona/mexico/japan plant by mistake. We'd all want a arm, leg, gold fillings and your granny for our guitars :D

You might find some good deals if you check your local pawn shops. But be careful, pawn shops tend to have either really good deals or really bad ones.

Hello Crock921,

I have been really lucky with
craigs list both buying and selling.
Always dealing locally and face to face
make for a seamless transaction.
My furthest purchase was about a 90mi
drive, Everyone I've dealt with
has been completly honest.

Best of luck on your hunt.

Cheers.

thanks, I will definitely work CL more. There does not seem to be a huge music community here in Milwaukee, but I will check Chicago too. Thanks for the pawn shop hints and I look forward to joining you all in the fender owner's world! :D
