This totally surprised me. But I think it's a great idea! And perfect timing as I was planning on picking up a tenor uke later this year but hadn't decided which brand to go with. Looks like Fender made my decision for me. Thanks!

The uke is a fine instrument--great for working on different chord substitutions, portable, and, depending on how you use it, quite well loved by audiences. I've used mine to accompany belly dancers (believe it or not; it sounds oud-like when amplified with a bit of delay), and when I've played rock with it, I've gotten great audience response.

A solidbody electric uke would be nice. I've been thinking of getting one of those Epiphone Mandobird IVs and restringing it uke-style. Specimen in Chicago makes a really nice-looking one, but it's very expensive.

Oh, also--for anyone thinking of buying a uke, geared tuners are your friend. Friction tuners are ok (and traditional) for higher-end ukes, but on cheaper ones, friction tuners will just drive you crazy.

So I got to my guitar lesson last night eager to tell my instructor that Fender is making ukuleles this year and when I arrive he's sitting with the director of the community center for the arts showing her a ukulele that he picked up and is learning the nuances of so he can teach some ukulele classes later this year (he's apparently been receiving a number of requests from people about uke lessons.) It's an omen.

Mrickard- Yeah, a solid body uke would be a lot of fun. There's a company in Germany named Risa that makes solid body ukes with a lipstick pickup. Personally I'd love one with a tele style bridge pickup.

That Morgan ukulele reminds me of the Eastwood Mandocaster mandolin:

Trivia time: Did you know that uku lele means "jumping flea" in Hawaiian?

wulfgyr--yep, Risa makes some interesting stuff. I'm not so much for the body shape of the ones with the lipstick pickups, though I really would have considered buying the third one from the left here (at summer 08 NAMM), had they brought it out:

You know, come to think of it, a solidbody electric Fender uke with a scaled-down Jazzmaster/Jaguar or Mustang/Duosonic body shape would be pretty hot. Anyone else think that, or am I the only one?
