Hey, I've noticed that there's a few Zappa fans here on the forum. I'd like to know if you ever hear his music on the radio where you live...

Not that it matters, mind you. Here in PA, I don't think you hear him at all. And if by chance you do, it's either "Yellow Snow", or "Montana"...

Also, what did you guys think of the Zappa plays Zappa DVD? I bought the CD version first, and thought it was just okay (dispite the obvious musicianship involved). It wasn't until I bought the DVD version that I began to think it was... well, great. I was really impressed.

Back in my day, I've seen him every year up until the Them or Us album came out. I actually stopped going to big concerts after that.

I miss that guy...

I wonder what he'd have to say about the mess we're all in today?

I never hear Zappa on the radio. I found out about him from a friend back in the early 80s. He is one of my top choices for amazing guitar players -- and I base that on the song "Shut up n play yer guitar". Have you heard it? I think it's my favorite all-time guitar solo!

I was 13 years old and was going through my cousin's record collection and found Freak Out. I was a big Beatles and Stones fan back then. I knew nothing about him. Talk about a culture shock. I really didn't get into his music until 1971. Then, I had to do a lot of searching to catch up.

On the DVD of Zappa plays Zappa, Dweezel laments about young people not having access to his dad's music. I loved the video cam on the head stock of his SG. It's an angle you don't see everyday. Well, at least I didn't.

I don't listen to radio, but I'd be shocked to hear any Frank over the airwaves. I've been a fan since We're Only In It For the Money (I picked it up because, as a major Beatles geek, I was intrigued by the Sgt. Pepper parody cover), and saw him live three times. It is a shame he's underappreciated by younger listeners today, but, in his own words, "Most people wouldn't know good music if it came up and bit them in the $@!."

Never hear him on the radio or mentioned on TV. It's only through the internet (and a bit later various music magazines) I've gotten into him.

Same for a lot of more obscure artists, really. Hmm. I wonder if there's a correlation between current major musicians losing money and overlooked legends gaining an audience, all because of the internet?

Zappa was a very talented musician who has left a great legacy behind if we will just take the time and effort to appreciate it.

It's obvious why he's not on the radio much -- it's his lyrics. While some songs have creative lyrics ( like montana -- the dental floss tycoon ), most of his other songs simply have perverted lyrics as a sort of a shock value which is just a gimmick.

But as a musician, I think his music is different and that's what makes it interesting. In my opinion, Frank's tripple CD set of "Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar" contains his best guitar work. There are no lyrics -- it's all guitar.

BTW... I saw Frank perform live at the Santa Cruz convention center -- I think it was 1982 or 1983. I enjoyed the show!

Joe

Chicago has enough stations where hearing Frank is not impossible, but certainly rare.

Especially in the case of this picker, who does not listen to radio much.
