Hello all. Just registered in hopes of getting some advice. After too many years of doing nothing, I've started playing again & I'm looking for a k.i.s.s. (keep it simple) PA system that will accomodate acoustic guitar, electric bass and two mikes at coffee house volumes.

I've been looking at the Passport systems, but I'm afraid that the bass, even at fairly low volume might fry the woofers. The stuff we're using now is designed for bigger places than I'll ever play again. It's also old, cranky, cumbersome and even though we do know how to keep the volume in check, when owners see us carting in our antique system, it tends to scare them (not to mention that we're usally set up in a corner the size of a postage stamp.

Any thoughts about whether or not one of the passport systems might work? All comments welcome.

Thanks!
MSL

Welcome!

Are you looking to run the bass through the system, mic it, or just an amp?

Fender has some nice little affordable PAs for small rooms.
Pack up and out in one trip. Google "Fender Products/PA"

Also check out a Musician Friend catalog. A lot of companies make small, affordable PAs.

And welcome to the show!! :)

Tomk62,

For ease of set-up, we like to plug everything directly to the PA. The present "system" is an old 6-channel Peavy head that drives two home built speaker boxes. The boxes use 12-inch Carvin bass/PA speakers for woofers. Plugging a bass directly into the head doesn't bother them in the least.

Another problem with the current set-up is that at coffee house volume, the system sounds a bit dead to my ear. Crank it and it still comes to life, but...

Thanks to all for the responses!

I'll admit to being somewhat ignorant on the topic but I have a great interest in it. :)

Anyway, in a small venue I would think you'd get better sound by not putting the bass through at all and just using the bass amp. (kind of the same reason why there's one single/separate sub-woofer on a home audio system)

I have been looking at package systems myself and the Phonic Powerpod line seems like a better deal then the Passport - more inputs and wattage for the money.

If anyone knows why I'm technically wrong (or right for that matter) please educate me! :)

A Passport PD250 plus or PD500 system could work if you use a direct box for the bass (and maybe guitar(s).

I'd suggest trying it (rent) and see what it sounds like before the gig.

My experience has always been to have more and not need than to need and not have.

That being said, I'd go with something like a Yamaha EMX series like this :
